A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I use a 13/16" plug socket on mine all the time... NGK B8ES plugs, right?
No.
Yea, 13/16 spark plug socket is the correct one.
Not on the 650.

It uses D8EA plugs, which are much smaller. :p

Ah, so, oh wise and experienced one...

I knew most (if not all) of the later 16V motors used the smaller plugs.

I can confirm that the 18mm socket DOES fit the D8EA plugs on my bike. I can't turn it yet until I make another run to the store but it does fit properly.

The more you know...

Plug condition

Plug condition

I finally got the plugs out of the bike, one at a time. I checked their gaps and they are right on. They are all D8EA, so that's all good.

But I'm not sure about the color/condition. They seem a bit sooty to me, but not terrible. Thoughts/opinions?

You can ignore the allen keys, they were just there to help me keep track of which plug was which when I get back to the computer to look at the pictures.

Yes, the insulators all look pretty dark. Clean your air filter, make sure it isn't over-oiled. Check the voltage at the coils (O/W wire) vs. battery voltage. Determine how many turns the idle screws go in to lightly seated and compare to the recommended initial settings in this thread for your model:

The initial settings are usually a little rich. If it's still rich after all that you'll need to check float heights and confirm the jet sizes.

Okay how are you riding your bike? You lugging it around town which would darken up the plugs or highway speeds? If it is highway speeds they are just a tad rich though not seriously. Other then that they don't look that bad at all. Your riding style will have an effect on the plugs don't forget.

I've only put about 50 miles on the bike myself since I got it, and mostly those have been city riding and yes I've been lugging it a bit. I'm getting better about that, but I don't like to scream her down the street in my neighborhood.

At this point I can't be sure how much hwy riding I will do. I'd guess for the next month or two that I'd be mostly riding around in town.

I also talked to the PO and he said changed the plugs last year when he rebuilt the carbs. I can't say how he rode the bike.

Would I be better of buying new plugs at this point or are these good enough for now? I'm guessing I wouldnt see a ton of difference.

Take it out and run it up to redline a few times, afterwards a few less RPM's will seem normal. Blow out that carbon!

So kinda like my car I need to take her out and run her hard and hot for a bit to clean out the gunk? (That sentence sounds really wrong. LOL)
