using studs for valve cover

headsbikesmopars

Forum Mentor
Has anyone tried using studs inplace of the bolts for the valve cover ? I feel I am ready to try this to help stop the oil from seeping in the front center area of the cover. I would only use them in the two center bolts (20 bolt cover) . I Just believe this will give more clamping force in that area without the risk of pulling the threads in the head. Anyone try this ?

If it's seeping, studs aren't going to fix it. Identify the root of the problem.

terry,
take a punch and put some spots around the cam chain tunnel on both the head and valve cover.
this has been known to keep the gasket from slipping in the past.

the root of the problem is a bad design by suzuki on the 80-81 750/1100 models.

What he said..
I have surfaced the valve cover .003 to ensure that it is flat..New OEM gaskets X 4 trys now. Tried different brands of cover gaskets...tried different covers as well. The cam chain and gear in the front just slings oil right at that joint seam. I have changed out the 'O' rings on the front center two head bolts, hopefully that will help stop the oil leak , or slow it down .

food for thought...
is there any way to add an oil deflector say made from alm. sheet or sheet metal to fit in the valve cover or to hang between the mating surface.

Terry,
When all else fails I use this stuff works great.
+1 on surfacing the cover. I have used a flat file but I'm sure you can do better than that.

Terry, I have NEVER had a problem getting a valve cover to seal. Have you checked the breather vent & mesh to make sure it isn't blocked or restricted? Just an idea. Ray.

Ray you must be blessed ;)

the 20 bolt covers/heads was redesigned to a 24 bolt cover/head to take care of the leaking problem.
if it was not a problem suzuki would have not redesigned it in the 1st place.:)

Thanks to everyone who responded. I will give an update after I install the studs. Ray , I will check the breather..I don't think it is pluged BUT that is the only part I havn't addressed. I like the idea of a small baffel to direct the oil away from the front of the cover. I will see what I can come up with on that. Thanks Blowerbike on that. Jim..I did the same thing with the file before I got my mill. You can do AMAZING things with a file..LOL! I made an offset crank key for my small block Mopar to move the camshaft 1 degree. LOL. I once milled a set of heads .010 on a 1970 Bridgestone 350 GTR my brother had.

I resurfaced an aluminum engine block (6 cyl Rambler) with a file and a 2 ft 2x4 with some emery paper glued to it...
