    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey Folks,

82 GS650E... working on getting put back together... I removed the carbs some time ago... last fall and now have them back on... however I realized this weekend that I do not have the 2 large vent tubes attached....

My questions...

1. What size is the tubing (can't find my old ones and I really don't want to remove the carbs again to find out)

2. And is there any certian way they are routed? Do they attach to the air filter cover?

Second Question...

The vent tubing on from the gas gauge... where does that go?

The carburetor vent tubing is the same size as your fuel line. I believe that the other end goes to your airbox, sort of a rudimentary smog system. (fuel vapors get recycled into the engine) I have seen some that just have the lines running down to a "drain" area like the battery vent. If you're running pods, however, your best bet is to just cap the vents to prevent siphoning.

At least that's how it is on my GS750EX.

Thanks... I have one vent tube that goes from the airbox to engine already... it is the two "vent" outlets (not sure what else to call them) located inbetween the 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 carbs. I don't see anywhere on the airbox that they would connect to.

I am looking at number 72 on the following diagram..

OK, you mentioned "air filter cover" so I will assume that you have a stock airbox, not pods. Your two vent tubes (yes, that's what they are called) will probably route over the airbox toward the top of the battery area. Some bikes have a retainer loop on top of the air intake. My 650L has pods, so I don't know what a stock 650 looks like. If you have pods, it is recommended to leave the hoses off.

The third tube that you say comes from the gas gauge, is probably from the sending unit on the tank? If so, that is just a safety drain in case the gasket leaks. Route it toward the back of the engine, then down, near the battery drain. IF it ever has any fluid in it, you don't want it dripping on a hot engine or exhaust pipes. :shock:

Thanks Steve! Yes I have stock air filter cover and it has the retainer loop on it. And thanks again also for the info on the tube from the sending unit!

I can't wait to hear her run...

PS- I was wondering during my last carb reinstall if pods where easier to deal with... Are they?

Yes and NO. :shock:

Yes because it is easier to remove 4 pods than it is to fight the airbox with 4 tubes if you ever have to remove the carbs.

NO (notice the emphasis?) because when you install pods you have to rejet the carbs. Although there are general guidelines, it is still a bit of a guessing game to get it right. If that is your idea of "easier" or maybe even "fun", then go for it. 8-[
