    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

VM Carb dipping

I am the new owner of a 77 GS750. I just found this bike in my friend's brother's basement. He said it had problems with the carbs. I pulled the carbs off and apart, and it was like someone was running corn syrup though them. I just sprayed them out quickly to see how things were. It seems good so I read though bike cliffs site, got some oring and carb kits, manifold orings and ss fasteners, oil and filter, plugs, and so on.

So here is the question. On the carb body, there is a plastic guide for the "slide assembly" that seems to be swagged into place. Are you guys soaking the whole carb body or are you keeping that part of the carb body out somehow?

Hi Mr. AracerX32,

You will find a copy of the VM carb rebuild guide HERE. Soak only the metal parts, no rubber. Sorry, I don't have VM carbs on my bike so I don't know what plastic you are speaking of. You do want to soak the whole carb body, but I don't think it's a good idea to soak plastic in carb dip.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

Their is a little pin inside the carb slide bore that doesnt come out..aligns with the slot in the slide itself..if thats what your thinking of..dont sweat it..dip the carbs..whatever holds it in place it wont move..dipped mine half dozen times and never an issue...be sure to read through basscliffs site and get new o-rings for the carbs and for the manifolds both...and welcome to the site..any questions feel free to ask..

I'm doing a set for a friend, he sprayed them out and thought they were good, never did run right. 12 hours after they were in the dip, the dip turned from a semi clear to a dirty brown. These will stay in the dip for a week or more before I do the final cleaning. There wasn't enough dip to fill my four stainless carb/dog bowls up over the top of the carb body, so they get turned once a day to insure all the hard "Syrup" gets melted out of the passages.

I did have another look this morning, and I am pretty sure that guide is plastic or something light can pass though. I was just checking that this is what you guys are soaking in carb cleaner, so here are some pictures. Let me know what you think.

Thanks. Figured it was ok, since you can't remove them, and you can't clean them without soaking, but safer to ask. What a great site and bike cliffs too.
 
I boiled mine for 20 minutes, dipped in CLR for 2 hours, then in Berryman's for 2 hours, then blown dry. No problems.
 
As everyone else is stating, it's ok put the bodies into Berrymans. I don't know if I would leave them in there for a week though. 24-48 hrs should be good.
 
I only leave the carbs in the dip the minimum time needed to clean them. Soak them too long and the metal turns dark.
