    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Wanted: Bad Igniters

Ok boys and girls!!! i've troubleshot 2 igniters, p/n 32900-45110. one has a bad scr that feeds the coil. shorted out. the second lost 2 transistors that provide drive to the scrs. Now all i have to do is get the parts! i am also working on a simple tester to verify if the igniter is working while on the bike. more to come.....

Just a bump to keep it going. Still working on it and waiting for some parts!
 
the igniter is not firing the coils which fire #1&4 cylinders on my 1982 gs1100.inside you can see where it has been hot and the circuit board is burnt.i replaced it with one from ebay that they said came off a running bike but still no fire to #1&4 .................any thoughts

i ALSO OWN A 1982 GS1100 GLZ AND ABOUT 1 HOUR AGO I FINISHED PUTING MY CARBS BACK ON AND WENT TO FIRE IT UP ONLY TO FIND VERY LITTLE TO NO SPARK AT ALL.CALL ME LUCKY OR UNLUCKY AS THE CASE MAY BE, BUT I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN TAILKING TO YOU MORE ABOUT THIS VIA E-MAIL OR PHONE IF YOU WANT TO.i HAD THE BATTERY OUT OF THE BIKE FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS BUT APART FROM THAT DID NOT TOUCH A THING.WEIRD !!!(APART FROM CARBS)IN CASE YOU WANT TO EMAIL ME IT IS stanos@shaw.ca OTHERWISE I WILL TALK VIA THE GS RESOURCES.

Guy's, 90-95% of the problem with the GS igniters is the "coil driver" transistor---there is one for the 1&4 cylinders and one for the 2&3 cylinders.

Most of the time, when they short out, this cause's the box to

"let the black smoke out"
The box will get VERY HOT to the touch---it will almost burn you if you touch it with the power on for minute or so.


The original transistor has a part # d997 on it.

There has been a number of different "replacements" for this number but most every number has been discontinued also. (2sd977 as one example)

I have located a replacement transistor, I can ship it to your door within the con. US for $12.00 if this helps anybody...This is my cost and I am just trying to help out others on there repairs to the old ignition.

So is this a common problem across all the bikes from 550 to 1100?

I've expierenced the same problem as a few of the guys on here who have only 1-4 or 2-3 firing. I swapped the wires from the one coil to the other then the problem was reversed. Is there an aftermarket igniter for the gs650?

I wont say common, but not unusual. 30 year old components, exposed to the elements and maybe also to some mechanic or electrician. Coils replaced over the years with non standard etc. Most electricals have marginal rated components and can easily fail if more current is pulled and they overheat.
The igniter is definitely fixable and the components are cheap.
I just need to identify the diode marked 350 accross the darlington pair, then I could make the schematic available to interested members on the forum:)

I know this is an old post, but is there any new information on this topic? I have an old igniter that could use an overhaul. Thanks I am willing to ship it to someone for repair.....
