    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What Starters Will Fit a 1978 GS1000

Does anyone know what starters will fit a 1978 GS1000? I was wondering if there was a Cross Referance Manual on the web? Thanks Joe
 
Well, this information might not be much help to you...

The original Suzuki part number for the '78 GS1000 starter is 31100-45040...

That number has been superceded by 31100-49050...

I'd suggest that you call a local boneyard to see if they can tell you which other models also use those starters; I'm not aware of any online cross-reference manuals, though I do hope that someone else has a link to one...

EDIT: OK, I just checked; the '80 - '81 GS850G, and the '80 - '81 GS1000G all use the same starter... I don't have the time to check any other models, but chances are good that most of the big two-valve shafties will ALL use it, though you should double-check that, just to be safe. IOW, since the GS1000G has that starter, the GS1000GL should also use it, along with the GS850GL models, and so on...

I'm pretty sure any one from a 78-80/81 750,850,1000 GS bike will work. I got 1 off ebay for my 79 850,it was from a 78 750. You can check the microfiche on Alpha Sports and cross reference the part # that pete gave.

BTW- I paid $.99 + 8.15 S/H--works GREAT!

Well, I did a little more research in my "free" time, and I think scotto58 is correct; chances are good that the starters from the model he mentioned will work for you. I originally focused on the shaft-drive models, because I had that page open on MRcycles.com, but it seems that most of the bigger chain-drive engines used that starter as well (which only makes sense; using one starter for several models is an economical way to keep the assembly lines moving).

clymer manual shows gs models 850 ,1000,1100 1979-1984 all basically having same starter
