DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I was wondering if light white smoke could mean that I put to much oil on the oil filter? If you squeeze it in your hand you get a light covering of oil on your hand. Could it be cold weather? I have read that white smoke is a lean problem? It is not very much but seems to get worst as it idles. I can reclean the filter and try less oil or could it be the air fuel screws? When exactly do you adjust them in the course of working on the carbs? last or before the final sync? This is for 82 650L.

i am willing to bet it is steam. seeing how our bikes are air cooled (ie no coolant) the possibilities are limited to oil past the rings, oil past the stem seal, oil past the head gasket seal, or water vaper/condensation in the exhaust.

i say vapor because you said white. if you said blue or blue-ish, id go oil.

ive you rev it up, does water spray out of the pipes?

nothing to do with too much oil on your air filter(s). imho.

If it's cold you'll get white smoke. Does it still do it with the engine fully warmed up?

I will find tomorrow it should be warmer. It starts right up , really amazing. It was taking forever to start. I think it was still smoking when I ran it up the alley and back only 3 blocks. It is not very much. I get it on the road alittle more I can pull the plugs. About how much oil is right for a stock air filter? I am not sure if I got that right maybe to much?

Wash the filters and re-oil. Quick bursts up and down the filter. Just a light coating. You should'nt be able to squeeze it out like you stated.

I am wondering about quick bursts? I was pouring it out of a 1 gallon oil jug. I am sure that is why it has extra. Do you have a better way?

uh, maybe im missing something. are you pouring the oil onto the filter using a 1gallon jug? if so, WRONG OIL (im assuming youre using motor oil), unless im incorrect. the air filters should use a special oil, and application is much much lighter than pouring it on. the trick is using the least amount of oil as possible. more isnt more, follow me? an oil soaked rag and a stern wipedown is PLENTY.

I will try to find the air filter oil. I thought it was the same as a lawn mower. I definantly put to much oil on it

ouch.

go buy a k&n recharger kit. good money spent. it will last a long time, and comes with the cleaner too.

I did not try the k&n kit but I did sop up the extra oil with a rag and it made a big difference. It still has a small amount of smoke but not to noticeable. The petcock is bad so when I get the used one I ordered off ebay it should be alot better. Then I can try to set the carbs. For some stupid reason it keeps getting really cold every weekend then warms up during the week and rains! seems like several weeks in a row.
