Looking for tires. Anyone tried the cheng shin marquis'?
Mostly I like the retro tread pattern, not really the best reason to buy a tire I guess, but hey. I am also interested in their C199 and C289, both for the tread pattern and price as well. I ride like a grandma and have a gs550 currently sporting an at least 15 year old dunlop rear that I myself have put 6000k on and a semi fresh yet sidewall crackly spitfire up front, so I think most things new would be an improvement...

The C-S Marquis have gotten some pretty bad reviews here over the years.
Try www.denniskirk.com and see if they have Bridgestone S-11 Spitfires in your sizes. They are being discontinued by Bridgestone and are on closeout at DK. I just bought some for my wife's 550, and got both of them for about $120, delivered.sigpic

My GK came with Cheng Shin Marquis when I bought it in 1999. Terrible tires, no grip in wet, even when riding like a grandma.
On the other hand, the Cheng Shin HiMax, both front and rear, is a very good tire, and excellent value for the money. Check it out.

I can second the HiMax series tires. Mine are a few years old now and last Fall they felt a little squirrelly in the rear on wet roads but that was also near the end of a long, wet and cold road trip so I was a little squirrelly myself. I wasn't sure if it was the tires or the road but hundreds of previous miles in the rain never showed a weakness. I'll buy another set so any bike I can't find radials for.

Hi,
I have one on the rear of my 850 and I like it fine. Beats the tar out of the worn out Bridgestone I had befiore. It tracks nicely and I rode in the rain for a short period and had no problems. I had a set on my Gs425 and they were fine. Put 1500 miles on them and they were still going strong. i ride for pleasure not commuting and they work for me.GS Score Card

When I was researching cheopo tires I read a lot of bad reviews on the Marquis and very good reviews on the Hi Max. I'm currently running Hi Max and am very happy with them.

Another enthusiastic vote here for the Hi-Max. We just took off a set from my wife's 850L. She put about 14,000 miles on them with absolutely NO problems, including an all-day ride in heavy rain during the last 1/4 of the tread life. Yes, we put on another set of Hi-Max.
Just did a quick comparison of prices at Tires Unlimited (only because it's just up the road from me).
...........................Marquis .. Hi-Max
100/90-19 front ......41.22.......44.68
130/90-16 rear .......49.87 ......51.31
TOTAL ..................91.09 ......95.99
The difference is a whopping $4.90. Considering the reviews just in this thread, I think I might be able to guess which ones you will get. 8-[

thanks for the dollars and sense reality check there steve.. $4 is not much money for what is reviewed as a far superior tire.
I didn't realise that the spitfires were being discontinued, that would explain them constantly being on sale...
thanks for the info guys

I used the Marquis once, it was not a very good tire. Got no life out of the tire, and the traction was iffy at times. The himax is a better tire, If you want to avoid the brand, then the Avon AM51(front) AM52(rear) are about the same price.

The Hi Max is a pretty decent tire with good grip and durability. The Marquis is in the running for the worst tire I've ever had the displeasure to ride on. If you love spending your time on your face on the asphalt, or sitting in the emergency room, having bones set and road rash treated, then by all means buy the Marquis.

I had the Marquis on the front of my GS 550L and just changed to Himax tires, HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!
The Marquis found every groove in the road and stayed there. Made for a very tiring and trying ride. The Himax tires are MUCH better and don't find the grooves in the road at all. They are MUCH more sticky in the corners than the Marquis also. Makes my GS 550 feel like a crotch rocket in the corners

looking for tires Help
WTB MOTORCYCLE TIRES - looking for tires Help
Need help in deciding what type of tire I should use.
My local dealers are trying to sell me the Dunlops D404.
I do not know anything about tires .
I would not mind spending alittle more for maybe a better quality tire.
I would appreciate any advise on tire make and model noting that I believe the front and rear tires should be the same model and make.
Need tires for 1996 Suzuki Intruder 800cc - front tire 80/90-21, rear tire 140/90-15.
Please contact Mel email address melalice2002@yahoo.com
Thanks
