what happens when usps dont take care of stuff!!

bought a nice tank off ebay for my gs450L. got it in yesterday and this is what i ound in the badly beat up box. needless to say insurance was not offered.first real bad thing ive had go wrong buying from ebay.

It is the responsibility of the shipper to pack it in a way that it will not be damaged during transport. You cannot count on USPS or UPS to really care for your stuff. I would tell the guy you bought it from that he owes you a refund since he didn't pack it well. I assume it was just in a box with a little newspaper around it? If it looks like it was packed pretty good then it's the responsibility of USPS but without insurance you are not going to get anything. I also bet you will not get a refund back on your tank from the seller either. I hope you didn't pay much for it and it's just a lesson learned. UPS has in their policy that items need to be packed to survive a 6 foot drop. That one looks like it was dropped, kicked, and run over.

That tank was run over or had something very heavy (>500 lbs and 3 ft fall) on it. There is no way that tank was just dropped. You could drop the tank from 500 ft unpacked and it would not crush in the side like that.

So USPS just **** happens you should have had insurance?

That's too bad. There aren't enough good parts left out there to have the post office destroying them needlessly. Sounds like you lucked out with a stand-up seller. If he really did pack it well, the post office should take responsibility.

If you get actually get a refund from this ebay seller, post his ID up so others here will know he/she is a stand up person. It will show up in a search if anyone takes the time.

That is great that he is being a good seller. Yes, you should have had insurance but on things like this I wouldn't have had it either. USPS won't do anything unless you have insurance. UPS has insurance up to a certain amount on every package if you can prove that it was their fault. USPS will do nothing so don't waste your time. They will tell you it should have been packed better. I've had experience with this and it's very frustrating.

I believe the cover to th stated value but I also think for something like a used car part you have to provide proof of the value in that you can't say your gaas tank was worth $500 just because it was damaged. You have to prove -ebay listings, CL listings, etc - that it really does sell for $500. If you got it off ebay maybe the ended listing and ebay confirmation or paypal confirmation will work. I've never filed a clain with USPS insurance just had a problem with the part that wasn't insured and the value wasn't much so I really didn't press the issue very hard.

Its been my experience that they will pay whatever they think its worth, take it or leave it. They send you a check and they are done !

USPS insurance is a battle you don't want to go through. The postal people in St Louis that handle insurance claims are some of the worst I have EVER had the 'pleasure' of working with...

After taking the damaged box and parts to the post office, filling out claim documentation, getting the other party to provide their input, then resending the claim info a 2nd time, then writing and chasing, then calling them. It took nearly 3 months of aggravation to get $75 from them - less than the cost of the parts and shipping - and certainly not enough to cover the time and money spent getting the $75.

UPS is far better - not that they are great, but they do come and inspect a damaged item, they do pay fairly prompt.
