    Cheng Shin Marquis rear tire

    I purchased a Cherng Shin Marquis 130-90-17 for the rear of my GS850G and thought I would give a little review.

    I know everyone here really likes the Hi Max tire and gives it high ratings. I had the option to buy that tire as well but chose this one because I was new to the bike and had a limited budget that had to stretch to other things on the bike. I paid $40.00 for the tire and $7.50 to have it balanced. Mounting was free.

    I have just over 5000 miles on the tire now and my riding is for recreation, not commuting. I ride about 50/50 highway and city. I have no problem running the bike in the upper rev ranges but I am in no way a member of the knee draggers club. With the 5k on it I will probably change it within 500-700 miles for a total of 6000 miles for the tire. At this point it will be down to the wear indicators in the very center of the tire. I check my pressure regularly and run about 38-40 psi in the tire. I never broke it loose or had any slippage or felt like I was going to lose it in a corner with this tire. I had a couple of rain expiriences with it and both were satisfactory.

    Overall I would have to say that for $50.00 it was not a bad investment. The next tire I put on will be a Dunlop that was given to me as a take off and in great shape. It was made 2 years ago. I am anxious to see if there is any glaring difference.

    Just thought this might help someone out there that had this tire as one of their choices and was on a tight budget.

    I got on with one of my bikes. Scary slippery. Feels bad. Can't ride normally because in the back of my mind I am questioning this tire's traction.
    I'm giving it away to anyone who really needs a slippery tire.

      Okay, got to ask, from that comment... what do you have it on and how much are you carving corners? Are we talking wet or dry?

      I'm not saying you are right or wrong just wondering why we are so far apart on the tire. What do you run now and feel is superior?

      I just threw my .02 in for someone who might be on a budget and not dragging pegs.

        Can't drag anything, the tire sucks.
        Just riding around town, they feel loose and squirmy, and the bike handles poorly. Feels like it always needs more pressure, but it does not. It has a good tire on the front, a Metzeler, maybe it would feel better with a crap tire on both ends.
        Lot's of bikes, lots of tires, the GSes mostly get Avon Roadriders, they are made of glue.

          Thanks for your review. I have not tried the Marquis, but am currently running a Hi-Max, after reading the glowing reviews on this forum. I have to say , it's a pretty good tire, indistinguishable from the Metz Laser it replaced. IIRC, the H-Max was only a few bucks more (around $50) than what you paid for the Marquis, and it will last significantly longer too (some have reported 8-10,000 miles, with conservative(s) riding). IMHO, Hi-Max are a blatant rip-off of Metzeler design, and are thus probably technologically superior to the older Cheng Shin line, so I would advise riders to spend the few $$ more..... they are still cheaper by far, than most other big name brand tires.

            The Marquis is supposed to be a relatively hard tire, I never used it, but I have used the Barracuda tire, and got NO LIFE out of it. The Hi-Max I don't mind it had better life than the Avon I have on now, which is starting to crack, it has only been a year and a half

              I have used Hi Max tires. Great Tire for the price. I have ran DUnlop GT501's, Pirelli Sport Demons, and now Avon Roadriders. The Roadriders have been a very solid tire through and through. I'm on my third set.

              As far as riding style, I would say I carve it up a bit.

              Far worth the money.

                has anyone tried the kenda k-657? wondering if it is a good tire for the $ thanks dave
