Is this a normal carb purchase?

So I purchased a set of carbs from a user here on the forum for $55 (Mikuni 34s). On his website he advertised that he had opened up the carbs and they looked good just needed some cleaning. When I first opened them up, this is what I saw.

I replied to a post-sale PM from the user because he asked me to advertise his little shop to some other guys on the forum. I was not asking for any money back, just commenting on how I was disappointed with the condition of the carburetors, saying it was clear he had not opened up the carbs because the dried up gasoline dust spilled out when I opened the bowls. If you cant tell from the pictures the floats were crushed on both carbs and one was even broken off and laying insde.

The user replied "What that is crusty old gas. Used carbeurtors have to be rebuilt and cleaned. If was to clean them and rebuild them, then the set would have went for like $300. You clean carbuertors by useing a hydrosonic cleaner or boiling them in simple green. I have a set of carbuertors for one of my bikes that was a lot of worse. GS650 rack. When you are buying carbs they are never cleaned. "

Does this sound like a normal carb sale to you?

The corrosion in these is extreme
Did he soka them in salt water or something?
I doubt that any of the passages would be free of the corrosion so evident in the float bowl area.

Clearly he never opened them up the crushed float isnt repairable by cleaning now is it?

My suggestion? Give his name to Frank to be put on the "Don't buy from this guy" list. those aren't worth $20, let alone $55.00, IMHO.

How could anyone with a conscience sell something that looks like that?

Those carbs are not worth 55 cents. It would be a miracle if they are even serviceable.

You should post his name here on the forum so no one buys anything from him.
If you have someway of getting your money back, I would ask for a refund and return the carbs.

I forgot to mention, I sent $5 more for a tach cable he sent me in the same box, which was BROKEN ON ARRIVAL! The notched end on the motor side was twisted and fraying. Good stuff eh?

I feel bad for you especially knowing that a member on this forum would sell crap like that to you. It's hard enough to make a buck these days, have to spend your hard earned money and not get what you pay for ..man that burns me up .

Whoever sold that crap to you should be banned from the forum!

It was through paypal, I haven't asked him for a refund because I needed one of the diaphragms, which is the main reason I purchased the carbs (besides having an extra set would have been nice). On top of that, he'd probably just sell them to someone else.

Today 06:03 PM almarconi How could anyone with a conscience sell something that looks like that? Those carbs are not worth 55 cents. I agree with the other opinions. Before posting the name of the seller I would give him a chance to make it right and if not then post his name in the ripoff area. Obviously the seller did not even look inside the carbs and was not honest in his statement of the condition. If the seller still thinks he can get the $ 300 from them ask if he will refund your money, you will pick up the shipping back to him and he can "make some money" on the re-sale. You would then be out shipping costs only but those carbs look like scrap aluminum to me.

Sorry for your troubles, another moron calling himself a carb "expert" proves to not have a f*cking clue.

IF THE SELLER WON'T MAKE IT RIGHT - BAN HIM

On the other hand, as stated you were looking for a diaphragm and it sounds like you got one and some extra parts.............
