    review: Motad 4-1, GS550

Hey guys, not many people have this system so i wanted to share my impressions of the motad 4-1 for the suzuki GS550 77-79.

Looks: very aggresive at the headports. the pipes angle down into the collector very aggresively making a V shaped appearance. It does not hang low at all. The muffler section itself is not actually very long but the collector is positioned about a foot past the 2nd bend allowing the muffler to reach back nearly as far back as my stock pipes. The chome is of a good quality. Smooth no ripples, very clear. It feels solid to the touch and I anticipate that with care it will hold up well through the years. The pipe was designed with old school bikes in mind and motad really did a nice job cause it certainly looks oldschool.

Performance: well, umm.. my butt dyno says yes, there was a gain! Without a dyno i will never know but there certainly is a power increase that you can feel.! Now, keep in mind this is not a straight through muffler so i dont know how much power im missing compared to lets say.. .a Vance & Hines. Im certain a straight through will provide more power in the last few thousand RPM but I have to say that I was pleased to find that power was increased throughout the entire RPM band, even in the 1-3 range! 4-7 is where you really feel it and thats good because the GS550 thrives in that range, being a great bike in the sub 50mph twisties. Power increases are continually felt all the way to redline. Now, perhaps my butt dyno is in need of some calibration since i have not been to the track in several years, but I do have proof in some numbers, and that is top speed. Immediately prior to installation the fastest speed I could ever acheive on my GS550 on a certain isolated straightaway near my house is 101 mph. Just barely hittin the ton. Now im hiting 106 and getting to 100 much earlier on the straightaway. Is the weight loss from stock exhaust the reason for this? the weight loss was substantial, probably 15lbs or more but its probably more of a contributing factor and that both are the reason for this slight performance increase.

Sound: is it quiet? YES and that is not everyones cup of tea. But the sound is far from boring. Here is how I would describe it. smooth and controlled. The tone is deep and clean but not monotonous. There is details in the exhaust note and the motor characteristics are still able to come out in the sound. Probably the thing that most surprised me about this exahust was the lack of drone on the freeway. This thing sounds great on the freeway! Very comfortable and you only hear it when you want to. If you are after a very sporty sound, you will probably hate how this exhuast sounds. It sounded quite pedestrian compared to a friends gs1100 with a yoshimura. But make no mistake, when im smashin around town, people still turn from far enough away to see what they are hearing.

To wrap it up, I had been looking for 2-3 years for any damn exhaust for my gs550! They simply dont make 4-1's for this bike anymore! (dont say MAC because I just really dislike that exhaust, especially for $350.00 sorry mac guys! they kinda look cool though!) So, here I am giving this thing glowing reviews, but i have nothing to compare it to besides my stock mufflers. In all honestly I would have taken anything other than a mac and if I had been given the choice I would have chosen the proven Vance & Hines system over this motad. But i do have a lot of experience from modifying and racing cars and this exhaust proved to be a very pleasant surprise. Not a single thing I can say bad about about it or was disappointed with it in any area. I have a GS550 so its not like I had a beast of a motor waiting to be unleashed. This exhaust design may not excel so well compared to other 4-1's on a gs1100 where big power numbers are more important. But if you are looking to upgrade to a 4-1 and you are a person who doesnt like loud exhausts or you rather prefer the sound of motor or intake, then dont hesitate to buy a motad. And especially for you 550 guys with no exhaust options! If you find a motad, scoop it up, fast.

Thank you for reading this lengthy review!

        Ebay.

Got a good deal on it too $219.00 US. It was from a shop in the UK and apparently had been sitting in a back storage for years and finally they decided to go through some old crap and found it back there. of course shipping killed me at $90.00 but $309.00 shipped is still a good deal compared to about 350+ shipping for a MAC.

unfortunately motad no longer produces this exhuast but i believe quiet a few uk shops still have it listed for sale. If you have a GS550 it might be worth it to give them a call and see if you can hagle with them for a deal.

BTW, i have a very clean Vance and Hines muffler section only for a GS550. Hit me up if you are interested. Chrome is very clean, no scratches. inside and baffle look very good for being used. I rate it 9/10. Hit me up if interested.

Could you post pics of what you have for sale? I have a 78 GS550 that I'm looking for a 4-1 system other than MAC as well.

$90 for shipping eh? Good to have an idea on the shipping. I remember some people recommending the Deeptone mufflers as being good quality as well from the UK. Maybe I will keep my eye out on ebay uk just for kicks.

$90 for shipping from the UK is one hell of a deal! That pipe looks sick!

PS: Would you happen to have any 4-1 headers for GS550?

              Thanks

Well I found a complete MOTAD system on eBay listed out of the UK. The seller is not willing to ship to the USA. Bummer! My search continues......

Hey guys, as promised more pictures...here, last moments of the stock exhaust.

Sorry my son has to purposely walk into this shot but I thought this pic shows the angular way in which the header pipes converge. the 1st and 2nd pipes are actually within fractions of an inch from touching. I was originally worried that this might cause some problems with buzzing or discoloration, or just something bad...but that hasnt been the case.

                    Side shot immediately after install

Remember, we are looking at the exhaust and not the lack of a rear seat or embarrassingly bald rear tire! Ive actually just had new tires installed since this pic and the seat, im working on it!

IMPORTANT: for anyone installing a new exhaust system. ALWAYS CLEAN IT ENTIRELY BEFORE FIRING UP! I believe this attributes to the large amount of bluing that many people have on their head pipes. Certainly discoloration happens from over excessive heat but if your pipes are greasy, then they will change colors regardless of fuel settings! I actually used windex. The hard to reach areas of my muffler ended up with a bit of a dry crusty film as you can see in this picture at the very inner rim. It still cleaned up however, as you can can see a portion was removed with the scratch of a fingernail on the right hand side.

Maddog, You should contact that guy directly and convince him that you are legit and willing to incur shipping charges. I would not give up if i were you. exhaust systems for these bikes are extremely hard to come by!!

Dreef, you mention the deeptone. I had my sights set on a deeptone for quite a while before i got the motad and the reviews out of the UK seemed very positive much more so than for the motad mostly because the motad was quiet. (apparently if its not loud then its not good!) 1 thing i did not like as much about the deeptone were its lines and angles and its fitment a bit further off of the frame, which also means hanging a bit lower. The motad to me seems to blend better with the styling of my bike and the look that I am going for. The deeptone has these real muscular bends and certainly harkens the notion of "musclebike" and it sort of becomes the centerpeice of a bike. In my particular project, I want peoples eyes to be drawn to the wheels and everything else chrome as supplemental.

See this december 07 gs photo of the month. The marshall deeptone does look very nice

Dont get me wrong, if the opportunity to get a deeptone at a resonable price presented itself I would have taken it considering the lack of GS550 exhaust systems out there. I did the money conversion off the the UK sites and including shipping they are running in the $500+ area and I just never got that bad to pull the trigger!

The motad looks good. I am glad you posted the review because I really wasn't aware of it before. Between shipping and the exchange it isn't a cheap option ordering from the UK!

Well, I took your advise and sent out a cry for help to the seller(s). I actually found a new system and a used system. Both are MOTAD's and both listed on eBay in England. Now I just have to wait and see if either seller replies. I sure like the looks and and the reviews. I would sure like to add this to my bike.

It still amazes me that there is only one brand of exhaust available for the 550 here in the US.

I just did a Marshall on my bike and it's wonderful. Great midrange performance.
