I'm trying to find out the exact differences between the "S" model and the standard versions. I have had a basket case for a while now, repainted in the "S" scheme, but I'm just not sure how to tell if it's a genuine S or not. I seem to remember something about the footpeg position being different, is that correct?

Australian S's were different on several details, such as the IP cluster. It's true about the 1980 version using reset pegs.
There is something about the SN too. I think the S's start with 52xxx (or something like that.) Post up the number and someone will chime in with the proper data.Ed
To measure is to know.
