Help , how to get to oil pump screen
How do I get to my oil filter screen on a 1979 GS425L. All of the information I have found refers to it as being identical to the GS400, even the part number. It has no cover on under the crankcase, only the one for the oil filter which is bolted on with 3 bolts, and there is a separate. oil drain plug on the left rear of the bottom of the crankcase. It does not have sump pan like the GS450. I have a Clymer manual and have searched the parts lists on the internet to no avail. -
Looking at the Clymer manual, the GS400,425 and GS450 all have an oil pan.
Are you sure you don't have an oil pan ?
A picture of the underside of the engine with the exhaust removed would be nice to see.Rijk

Yup, no oil pan. There is a 425 crankcase on eBay for anyone that want to see for themselves. The oil pickup housing and screen are deep inside the engine. I don't think there is any way to get at it without splitting the cases. The only maybe maybe, if you get lucky way, would be to remove the clutch cover, remove the clutch, then oil pump, and looking through a hole in the crankcase behind the pump. You might be able to fish a brush though the passage to clean off the screen. That's a big maybe, though. I'm just guessing based on photos.

Thanks guys, it is puzzling as there is no documentation anywhere referring to this change in 1979, looked every where and nothing about the GS425. Always says "same as GS400". Have a picture of similar model, will try post. Thanks once again for your response. Will maybe try the technical forum. DSCN0884.jpg
