    1982 gs1100l

    I’m going to look at an 82 gs1100 later this week and was wondering if there is anything specific I should keep an eye out for when deciding to buy or not.

    Not many problems with these bikes. Zuke GS's did have relatively weak clutch hubs. and the rear wheel hub on the shaft dr. models were weak, and required to be maintained with very expensive moly lube paste. Not sure if "82" had upgraded hub or not, but still needs this moly paste. One thing to keep in mind with all GS's, usually the "L" models don't fetch the prices the more standard "E" and "G" models do. The "L"'s are just as good, same eng., trans, elect. they just seem to be not as much sought after as the others.

      rphillips is pretty close.

      It wasn't the rear wheel hub, it was the drive splines that were weak. Started with the late '81 models, might have been on a few of the very early '83s, but pretty much all of the '82s were affected. Not just the 1100s, but all the shafties. Easy to change to a new/used one and also easy to maintain. I don't agree with the "very expensive moly lube paste". It's about $20 or so for a tube of lube that will last you and your bike a lifetime. I bought a larger tube because I take care of several shafties, and have only recently gotten into a second tube. And it's not frequent maintenance, either. Just apply a little bit of lube every time you change the rear tire. It's also a good time to change the final drive fluid.

      Other than that, the only other thing to really look for is a proper charging system.
      If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

        Hey WHO, do you have a link for some of the molly stuff, I've found plenty of 2% to 5% or 6% moly grease, but the 50% to 60% paste, that I thought was needed I've not found reasonable priced.... Hoping for help, and thanks in advance.

          Amazon has Honda 77 - what exactly that means, is anyone's guess.


          I bought a tub of similar stuff a couple of years ago and so far it's working just fine. No real long-term results yet, nor are there likely to be. It's doing a bang-up job of protecting the splines for now, but who can say what it will be like in 100k.

            For me it was very hard to find how much Moly was in them. Long time ago finally found, if I remember right, the Honda 60 and 77, and the Suzuki 60G were all something above 50%. All the moly grease I find is usually less than 10%. I looked up several of the others, like the one you've pictured and almost never can find the % moly.... Roughly $10 per oz., not many things I pay that for.

              Is it a shaft? If not, then it should have 16 valves. Two completely different engines. A few pics will determine the exact model. Good luck!

                It's very hard to determine what % is the various lubes available. I went down this rabbit hole about 4yrs ago. From what I could find, the Honda moly lube no longer has the high % that we desire. Really the only info I could find that proved this was on forums, so take that into consideration...

                I ended up purchasing Loctite 234227 LOC51048 Moly Paste Anti-Seize Compound. From what I could find at the time, it's supposed to be 65%. However as you said, it ain't cheap. It's currently $53 and change on the jungle site for 8oz. I think when I bought it I paid ~$40. I've only used it once when I installed new spline joint and tires about 6k miles ago so jury is out on performance. I'll be changing the rear tire again soon and will reapply the paste.
