1980 GS550E igniter location.

As per the title, I may well be having (another!) senior moment here but, for the life of me, I can't find the igniter for the cdi on my 1980 US market GS550E. Any help in guiding me towards this would be much appreciated.

I did a search of the forum (in fact, it was a general internet search that led me to the forum), but the only similar thread I could find was for a GS650.

You could follow the wires from your signal generator. Should go right to it. Mine is right under the starter relay on the left side.

Can't find it on the bike or can't find a replacement? GSes didn't use a CDI. They had an igniter.

You could follow the wires from your signal generator. Should go right to it. Mine is right under the starter relay on the left side.

My wires appear to connect with the main loom via a block connector (inside the boot in the first photo).

Yes, that's the part, and I found it listed on the CMSNL website (very handy for research) for the 1980 GS550E. I just can't find where it is located on my bike.

Look on the right side (as you sit on the bike) of the air intake box shown in your second picture. The signal generator is on the right side of the crank shaft. It has wires come from it. Those wires go to the igniter.

Your first and third picture is of the left (stator) side of the bike.

Strange…remove the round cover over the signal generator setup ….maybe some PO opted for dyna setup, which eliminates the factory ignitor

Then where do the wires coming out of the other side of that block connector go to? As Tom guessed, maybe they go directly to the coils, if they’re Dyna aftermarket coils. Though your signal generator appears to be original OEM.

Good on you for figuring out posting pictures, honestly. Many struggle.

Pretty sure that the wires go back into the main harness.

Haha. That's a nice problem to have. Great collection. That green Yamaha looks like my very fist bike, a 1972 DT250. Same color too.
