I hope I'm wrong and bikes can fetch these prices.
When you have something special like that bike you put it to a big name auction. When you have a bike that has seen use for 20 years you put it on craigslist/facebook. If I was to sell my kat ever i would put it to auction, cause there are very few like it.

No doubt, That'd be the thing to do. No doubt way more money there than could be expected from a, what I call, "real world sale"

Down side is the auction house takes a cut, in rough terms if the seller took the cheapest mercum options then they have to pay Mercum about $1400 out of the $16,500 it sold for. You would need to factor that in too. The seller made 15,000ish minus what ever it cost to get it to Vegas and hotel costs. Seems like a lot of effort to sell a bike for a 10k profit if they bought it for 5k. I would need the market to grow before i tried selling mine, I put a lot of effort and money into it to just make a few thousand in profit, which wouldn't cover labor costs if i tried to put a value on my time.

I was one of the bidders on the Mecum GS1000S.

I flew to Vegas to bid on it and was *very* disappointed at its condition. It was considerably rougher in person than it appeared in the pics. One mirror was literally falling off, and both of them were flopping around in their mounts and would never have stayed in position when underway. It had no rear brake, a bolt broken off on the countershaft sprocket cover, and general nicks and scratches. And, it probably didn’t even run. I bid on it anyway to see if I could get it cheaply. I quickly got steamrollered by other bidders and it finally hammered for $11,500 ($12,600 including fees).

I have a feeling the winning bidder wasn’t in the room, because I don’t think a reasonable person would have paid that much for it. assuming I’m correct he will be sorely disappointed when it arrives at his house.

it wasn’t a total wasted effort however. Later that day a friend found one listed on Las Vegas Craigslist, for sale in Southern California. It was in much better condition and it runs perfectly. I flew down Saturday and inspected it and did a deal, then drove down Monday and hauled it home Tuesday, and rode it today.

Here’s a pic from the seller. It’s probably an 8 or a 9. Missing a few small bits including one of the clamps that holds the black trim to the edge of the windscreen, and the knob to adjust the clock. It has a bit of wear here and there but is in great shape for 25k miles.

I paid more than the Mecum buyer did and got a MUCH better bike that I can ride now and nit have to get running first.
