Stator got the once over from Drill Seargant bear Hahn and was certified mission ready so headed to the tree stand this morning. Stator hit 9 out of 10 at 100 yards so I figured he was good to go. I wont hog the glory so i will let Stator tell of his first deer hunt. Take it away Stator...
First let me thank Chuck for hosting me, teaching me some basic shooting skills, and taking me hunting.
The morning started at 5 to the alarm. Chuck laid down some rules while in the stand...No coughing, sneezing, belching or farting. If you gotta move move very slowly and look around mostly with your eyes and keep your head still. Listen for leaves crunching and detect movements as they could be deer back in the brush moving.
So we got into the tree stand around 630 and got settled down. It was dead still and so quiet you could almost hear your own heartbeat. Somewhere about 50 yards or so to our right we heard a hoot owl welcoming the day. Crows came in and landed our tree and some fox squirrles were playing a trick on me. Chuck said listen for leaves and i got all excited and my heart raced...Chuck never mentioned these pesky fur balls.
Sun came up and it was around 815 when the first deer came out. It was a small doe and she made her way up to the corn feeder. Then 4 more came out and cautiously came in. We had a doe tag but Chuck waved me off and they ate some and left. It was about 845ish when it happened!!!
I was looking off to the left and saw some movement through a big cedar tree....and it wasnt squirrels!!!
First out came a smaller 5 or 6 point and i saw more movement behind him so i looked and saw an 8 pointer coming in. I looked at him through the scope and decided that for my first hunt and first ever deer he was mine!!! I centered the crosshairs just behind the shoulder like i was taught and squeezed off a shot.
The buck mule kicked and bolted off through the sun rays streaming through the trees and we watched him pile up. He went less than 35 yards and I had my first deer!!! As we stood by the buck i noticed that Chuck was still and very quiet as he looked at him laying there. I asked what he was doing and he told me that he was paying his respects to the deer and mother nature for allowing us to partake in the harvest of the animal and for the nourishment it will provide. I learned its not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Now the work was started field dressing him and dragging him out to where we could get the 4 wheeler to finish the task. I will say one thing. It sure feels good to know one can be self sufficient and be ready to provide from natures bounty. Thanks Chuck for this experience and teaching me the what being part of nature is all about.

Any word from Steve? It would sure be nice to get Stator's journal back. Cowboy told me this morning that Steve had "misplaced" and can not find Stator's journal. . Maybe true, but I think it's a bunch of BS... That journal has been around the world! It would be a shame if it got lost in southwest Ohio!My Motorcycles:
