The Cerakote stuff as advertised by this coater is a high temp powder sometimes denoted as "ceramic", although in my opinion that's a bit disingenuous of a designation. At any rate, it does hold up to exhaust heat.

Oh, and I LOVE what you are doing here. Any port (or bedroom as it were) in a storm. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

You have a seriously supportive wife/girlfriend, that's for sure. I hope you can stay friends once you start using the chemicals and cleaners necessary, along with all the rust, dirt, grease and grime that comes off. No use of water on it in that room, either I'm assuming. I applaud your efforts, though. I will follow with interest to be sure.

"I have only used Por-15 products for tank lining"

I have not found anything in the same league with Red-Kote. Stuff seals anything, even holds rusty particles in suspension. It's tougher than a basketball. I poured a small puddle on some concrete once and it sets up as indestructible. I've sealed some serious problems with it.

Nice! Good luck, I am looking forward to the progress pics. I'll bet the landlord never though of a " No Motorcycle Restoration Clause "

I'm wondering if the bike is in apartment or a house. I had my bike in apartment in New Mexico and I got in trouble for it.

I don't need my bike inside the house when I have room in my two-car garage. (Grin)

Do they sell Metal Rescue in a 55 gallon drum?
                If so, highly recommended

Last night I drained the gas and oil; removed the tank and seat; and removed the battery.

I had my first unplanned learning experience. Here's what I found out:

                  1. A single 1-gallon jug of Lactaid-brand psuedo-milk is not enough volume to hold all of the oil of a GS1000.
                  2. Bounty paper towels absorb 15w-40 at the rate of roughly 15 sheets per pint.
                  3. Blue tarps should be advertised as "marriage preservers."

The crankcase was overfilled. A GS1000 doesn't take a gallon of oil to fill level.

                      At least it had oil.
From the looks of that bike you are going to need some more tools and BIGGER hammers.

The local guy wants $650 to powder coat the frame, $108 to powder coat the swing arm, $108 to powder coat both stands, and $450 to cerakote the exhaust.

Get yourself 2 or 3 cans of Appliance Epoxy and do the chassis yourself. Hard to tell if that exhaust is even worth saving....

Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

                          VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Just remembered, I visited the family that lives in the house I lived as a teenager. So as we tour the house I see the kid in my old bedroom in doing a Yamaha XS400 restoration right there by his bed!!!!

You've got your work cut out for you with this one. Those powder coat prices seem really high. Could just be your local market, but I paid around 450 for the frame, swingarm, and a batch of small brackets, etc.

Maybe was overfilled... or... maybe was not all oil, could have been oil and gas (if petcock left on PRIme).
