Was looking for confirmation, guy that owns it says it's a gsx1100 looks tatty and wants good money for it.

Over here, we'd call it a GSX1100E. As Ed said, 80 or 81. I think those were 1980 colours here, but I can't be certain.1980 GS550ETComment
