    Engine number

    Hi guys

    Can anyone help me out understand what engine is sitting on my bike? I have been now searching for hours without finding a answer. My bike is a Suzuki gs 450 from 1985. The confussions happens when I ordrer pistionrings for my bike, they always appears bigger then my originals. Never the right size. I then looked at my engine today and discovered that is says GS40X-105259? can anyone make something out of that number? It would be a lot easier to buy spareparts for the right engine, if the now sitting engine is been replaced by previous owner.

      One clue to your engine size will be on the front, near the base of #1 cylinder.
      You will see numbers there that indicate the displacement.

        Yours is probably the European/Canadian model with the 4 valve per cylinder configuration. The easy way to tell is whether the caps on the end of the valve cover are rectangular or round. Round indicates the 2 valve per.cylinder model and the rectangle are the 4 valve per cylinder model. Your engine if I remember correctly should be a 4 valve.per cylinder 400cc motor. I don't think the 450 ever had the 4 valve per cylinder head.

          Thanks for the info. Regarding cylinder configuration, my cabs are two round. Hi Steve, thanks - I will check later today to locate the nummer.

          bwringer - many thanks for the information. I will try to located the number Steve is referring to and hope to figure out the size of the engine. If its a dead-end, I will then try to order new pistions for a gs400

            I have now tried to locate a engine number as Steve, but there is no number unfortunately. I did find other numbers, but not sure what to make out of them?

                  Since you have the cylinder head removed. measure the bore. A GS400 has a bore of 65 mm. You have 4 valves per cylinder,, so it has to be a 400.

                    Am I seeing something different? I see 4 valves per cylinder, and a stamp on the barrels saying 399 cm3. Looks like a GSX400 engine to me.

                      OK then. He said when asked if he had round or square carb caps, his carbs were round. Confusingly he shows a pic of a 4 valve head which would have rectangular cam end caps. I will guess he didn't understand that and posted his were round meaning his carb bodies were round. If the head on the bike is 4 valve per cylinder, then it is 400 and the rings he needs are 65mm.

                        Fair point.

                        Mundtsar - it did look like you said you had round cam end caps. Just for absolute clarity, could you post a picture of the cylinder head from the side, ideally with one of the chrome caps attached?

                              Hmm, it could be? I did measure the position(only the pistion, without the rings), and it says 68mm - I used a measuring tape, so I guess its not 100% exact. Should I take in to considerations that the top and bottom pistion rings are wider than the actual pistion, when I measure ?
