    Bought myself a $500 birthday present, 1978 GS1000C

Since today is my birthday I decided to go pick up the 1978 GS1000C that I had reserved. Its a one owner bike with 20,129 miles on it. It has been sitting in a garage since 2006 with the tank and carbs drained. I plan on getting it back to as close to original as possible after all the "essentials" are taken care of! I know I will be needing an airbox, battery, chain guard, seat grab bar and new handlebars. Going to have to take care of brakes, tires, carbs, electrical and de-rust some items. Tank is clean on the inside with no "bubbling" in any of the seams. Seat pan is like new. Some surface rust on the front fender, headlight rim and handlebars. Previous owner purchased the bike new and parked it when he bought a Harley cruiser in 2006. Has the original tank paint and a Vance & Hines pro sport exhaust which needs paint badly! Here is a picture when I unloaded it!

Now I need help identifying what is needed to bring it back to original other than the pipes and the items mentioned above.

      What's that smell? SKUNK!

A skunk in any color is still a skunk.

Congrats, looks great, especially at that price.

I'm sure you know how historically important your bike is - it's the bike that dislodged Kawasaki from the top slot in the 1/4 mile wars.

Upon further inspection....aka; removing some of the dead weight(luggage rack, old dead battery), I found that this bike already has a Dyna S ignition, along with stator wire connections that look like this:

Don't you just love these old stators and rectifiers!

I'm still "VERY HAPPY" with the purchase!

A true "skunk" with single front disc!!!

Happy Birthday, btw. Nice find for the price and the rarity of such a bike.

There's plenty here to help along the way. Thanks for posting this announcement!

That tank alone would fetch close to what you paid for the bike, what a great deal you got and happy birthday.

Just for sh*ts and giggles I stuck a battery in it, and all the lights work! This thing just keeps getting better! Got some oil fogged in the cylinders now. Gonna wait a while before attempting to start it. Got the dreaded luggage rack off and it already looks better! Checked a few places with surface rust and it looks like some Mothers Mag Polish and elbow grease will clean most of it off. Gotta get it running to ride to the DMV for a VIN inspection by the sheriff before I can transfer it to my name since it has an Ohio title. Hope we get a warm dry day next week.

And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
