A GS 650GL (with it's low seat height) would be fine for you if you want a vintage bike. Shaft-drive, low maintenance (once you get it squared away) etc. You can view one in the photo gallery of this site.

Hey, David, the OP? Go look at this Nighthawk SC . If for no other reason, just because I've always wanted one. Never cared for the Nighthawk, but the much rarer, prettier, sportier, Nighthawk SC has forever caught my eye. Seems to be very nice & orig. & $1000 less than that GS1000 he was looking at.
