1980 gs850 throttle issue
I think I have a couple things going on here that I can't seem to solve. (1) I have a new petcock that is vacuum controlled. Earlier I asked a question on it because it constantly ran. I was told to adjust the plastic valve in it to the vertical position. That seemed to work for the time being. Now it appears that it will run in vertical or horizontal position with no vacuum put to it. Is it faulty? (2) I just had the bike running great for a long period of time. stopped it and then went to restart a while later it runs but when I give it some throttle it bogs and then dies. That is why I checked the petcock again. Could the petcock be the cause of the engine bogging out under throttle?1980 GS850

Is this an 850G or an 850GL?
By your description of the petcock, I'm suspecting it's a GL.

Gosh, always hated those stupid "80" model petcocks, thank goodness only one year. Only suggestion, run a fuel line from petcock, down into a jar or pan, see if you can turn the slot to somewhere that will stop the fuel flow, when, if, flow stops, that should be the run position. Turn it till fuel flows freely, that should be the pri. position. If fuel never stops, no doubt bad petcock. If you do find the on pos. also put a piece of hose to the vacuum port of the petcock, gently suck on the other end, very little vacuum opens it, quit sucking & fuel should stop. Good luck.1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100

Tried the extended gas line. the petcock runs freely in the vertical and runs under vacuum at horizontal. The bike was running great earlier today. It will start up and run only with the choke on now. Not really sure what to check next.1980 GS850

Certainly you have found by now that it DOES make a difference which one you have. Especially with the things that were really different, like the fuel petcock.
There were a few others, too, but there is no sense in mentioning them unless there is verification that you have an "L".

Several visual clues:
1. front axle ahead of forks or inline?
2. front fender chrome or painted?
3. gauges individual circles or in one large, oval pod?
4. handlebars rather tall and uncomfortable or mid-rise (might have been changed by previous owner)
5. gas tank all round-ish (and about 3.5 gallons) or does it have beveled edges running the length (and about 5.8 gallons)?
6. do your side covers say GS850L or GS850G?
7. is the seat stepped or rather flat?
8. is the rear fender chrome, with a tail light on top of it, or is is plastic, and under a plastic tail piece that also houses the tail light?
The first half of each question would identify that part as an "L", the second part would be for a "G".
The handlebars are commonly changed, as they are rather uncomfortable. The seat is sometimes changed, as it is uncomfortable as well. Most of the other items don't change easily, so would be good indicators.

I took my carbs off and cleaned them again. The bike does start and will idle and run fairly well when warm. When I give it some gas it has a sluggish response as get up to 3500 rpms. The bike has air pods on it no airbox it came to me that way. I have air screws out 3.5 turns. Any suggestions on getting to run better. thanks.1980 GS850
