New GS850 Owner & Member - South Africa

Hi guys! I newly joined and this is my first post. I needed transport
(once again). Not into cars (wagons are useful though; well,
sometimes), but my heart beats for bikes: and it has all of my life
(daddy, can I have an iron pony?). Did some research: and I knew, the
GS is the only way to go. Always liked Honda's, but I'm a convert now
(I didn't know any better, ok?!). Bought a 1981 GS850G that has been
taken well care of (I'm the second owner), but it has been standing
for 8 years. Bike won't start at the moment. Well, time heals
everything. It's awesome to have discovered this site! Looking forward
to being part of this community.

    Greetings
    Pierre Joubert

Welcome! And awesome bike! Post some pictures of it if you can!

If it's been sitting a while, it's no surprise it wont run. These old bikes require lots of love to start running correctly. Here's a quick list so you know what you got yourself into:

-Rebuild carbs (COMPLETE disassemble and new orings from http://cycleorings.com)
-Possibly new carb<->head intake boots and new orings (also from that site)
    -Valve clearance adjustment
-Seal up your airbox (30 year old sealing doesn't do a good job)
-Check your petcock, and replace if necessary.

Anyway, we'll here to help! Check out the "Mega Welcome" and BassCliff's site. There's a TON of information and guides there.

Welcome to the site. I think you'll find your 850 responds well to even a little TLC. Get her back on the road and enjoy!

            Hi guys,
Thanks so much for a warm welcome!
I truly appreciate the insight and enthusiasm.

I think there is a connection between the soul and a bike.

              Good morning Naturchine.

Welcome to the site. The 850 is a good beast. Honda makes good machine too.

Well another South African. I will have to take a ride that way one of these days.

                Greetings Highway_Glider
                Thanks for the welcome!
You probably mean you want to fly this way (unless you were sarcastic)?
Is there a road I don't know about?
Let me know if you ever decide to come around.
I don't endorse gambling: Sun City I believe should be one of your stops.

Only half joking around. There seem to be more than a few Safer on the site now.

If you do find a road straight across I'll ride it.

                    That's the spirit.
Don't tell me you're half joking around about it as well?
