    The potential of ownership

My name is Gordon Dowton. I live in Ajax, Ontario, Canada....where the snow and cold from everywhere else seems to gather. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1982 gs1100 for $2200.00. I would love to have this motorcycle, but tend to mentally waffle about as regards the price. What makes it even a little more difficult is that the gentleman selling such, is one of the nicest people that I have met and I would almost purchase the bike because of this, silly as it sounds. In other words, it is hard for me to approach this objectively. The motorcycle is in very good condition......but I am somewhat aft a loss to do. In saying hello, I appear to be asking for some help in this area.....I suppose that it is rather straightforward....do, or do not do?

In any case, I am very glad to have found this site. Many thanks, Gordon

If you have a picture of the bike that would help us to determine if the price is fair. Which 1100 is it? the E or the G? how many KMs? You should make sure the exhaust is solid and there is no rust in the gas tank. There's a few other things to look at with these bike but you'll have to fill up in on the exact model first.

          This ... ?

          That would be an E.

Someone painted that to look somewhat like a Wes Cooley race bike.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I was somewhat startled to see the bike pictured in Redman's post as the bike I am looking at is from Markham and is painted in Wes Cooley colours. It has 45,000K on it and is very clean. The gentleman is a motorcycle mechanic and restores bikes. Please excuse me as I do not have pictures(save the one in Redman's post....how ironic!). Many thanks again, Gordon

Yes we are sneaky sleuths hereabouts.
I would not buy that bike it is a one off custom job parodying a classic.

But if you like it go nuts.

I agree with this. I can't see well in the pic but you should ask q's such as has the wiring been refurb'd, are the brake lines new, how long has he owned the bike, is there a maintenance record? You can also ask for a seller's package that he has to buy from the MTO that will list previous owners. It's $15. You can get it yourself if you have the VIN.

That price for a bike that age is top, top dollar. There are lots of examples of these bikes for sale in Ontario and more come on line all the time.

When you buy an old bike you have to be able to, and have to expect to have to, work on it, unless everything has been done. last year.

That being said, these are good bikes. Even if it all pans out I'd offer quite a bit less. Cash. And be ready to walk away. Bikes don't sell fast in Ontario in February.

If its pretty and it works well, that isn't a far fetched price.
