    Greetings from Maine

First time bike owner, bought a 1983 Suzuki GS850GL, 14636 for miles, bike has been stored for the past 5 years, is in excellent condition, dropped a new battery in it last night. Needs a starter, oil change, plugs. Looking forward to learning as much as I can from the forum while a buddy of mine and I work on the bike.

Welcome! It looks like it's in pretty good condition. You may want to plan on also stripping the carbs and cleaning them. It's almost guaranteed that there is varnish in them after 5 years of sitting.

        Welcome to the site.
What is doing or not doing that it requires a starter?

Welcome, Its nice to see another Mainer on here. You have certainly come to the right place. Some of these guys know more about these bikes than Mr Suzuki himself.

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

Thanks Steve, good to be here. The brushes in the starter were toast, I'm actually installing an aftermarket starter later this evening.

Thanks! Been reading as much as I can, both on the forum and technical sites. Got the bike running today, dropped a new starter relay in it. Something going on with the starter button or harness, had to bridge the gap of the solenoid with a screwdriver to start her up but she runs pretty well for not having been started in 5 years;-) Now the real fun begins - clutch plates appear to be stuck. Seen a ton of information on this on the forum so I'd best get reading.
