    84 gs1100gk from NE Ohio

Just bought a 84 gs100gk for $800 the other night and currently have the carbs off. According to the owner bike is flooding dripping gas out the airbox even. I have had my motorcycle endorsement for like 3 years now but no bike. I had bought a old nighthawk for like $400 and rode it for a couple weeks on bald tires, messed up clutch, transmision barely shifting, determined the winter it wasn't worth fixing. This year finally started looking at bikes again but with a very tight budget so took a few months. I started to like all these old gs750s and such I was seeing on craigslist. So after seeing the ad for this one and being given the run around on others I was determined to get this one even though baggers aren't my thing this seemed to be in ALOT better shape but pushed my budget. Met the guy the other day around 5 PM gave him the cash and got the title, and 10 that night my buddy from work came with his truck along with the wife and father in law and we got it home. Next day got the tank, airbox, and carbs off then drained the oil. Oil didn't have much gas in it which was a worry from the flooding and the reading I did on the petcock and carbs, but as the oil was done it still was dripping which had a slight smell of gas. Carbs have been a real B**** to get apart but got a impact screwdriver that seems to do the trick just ran out of time. Tomorrow will have the carbs apart and cleaned hopefully.
I know shut up and show us the bike! Right?

Nice looking bike. Since you have the carbs off, now would be a good time to replace the rubber boots. The 30 year old rubber is probably hard as a rock and the o-rings on the intake side are probably shot.

Intake boots were supposedly replaced 2 years ago look good. Airbox is completely apart and looks good except for being pretty dirty. Intended on doing o-rings speaking of which cycleorings is on a hiatus. So any suggestions on getting orings asap would be nice haven't had time to look around more or money get paid today.

          Thanks for introducing your self.

Looks like nice condition GK, with custom paint that follows the stock pattern.
Most GKs these days have been dee-Kayed.

THat stock seat is something of a rarity. THe stock GK mirrors are more of a rarity.

Good that you have learned about the petcock.
I have not had that experience myself, but most folks say not to bother with rebuild kits, just get a new (or used) one.

In your looking into the petcock, you did learn what the 3 positions are, didn't you?
          Don't leave it in PRIme.
If it has been left on PRIme, that itself could be your problem.

If you have the gallon size carb dip, the carb cleaning will take 4 or 5 days, in order to soak each carb body for 24 hours.
If you don't have any carb dip bucket, then you are not going to do a good carb clean.

          > >
Looks like the fairing is the maroon, in which case would be from an early 82.
THe tank and bags look like the black.

First, if the carbs are dripping you need to look at the petcock, as others have said.

Next, look at the floats, because their job is to shut off gas flow from the tank into the carbs when it is not needed.

Sometimes the floats allow leaks when the bike is on the side stand, but that can usually be fixed by adjustment. If adjustment of the floats does not correct the problem, then replacement of needles/seats is HIGHLY recommended.

Not a bad looking bike. I like the fact the speedo goes past 80 unlike some of the other models during the 80's

check the 10 newbie mistakes thread

1A) (NEW) Trying to diagnose running problems on a bike with an unknown maintenance history. Common maintenance items like clean carbs, properly adjusted valves, no air leaks in the intake system (airbox, carb boots), a clean gas tank (no rust), and a properly functioning petcock are 100% mandatory for the bike to run properly.

(By the way, do yourself a favor and NEVER turn the ignition switch to PARK or LOCK unless you are prepared to risk replacing the ignition. On these older bikes they usually end up never being placed in PARK or LOCK, only ON or OFF as a rule and as the key wears in some positions you may find the key stuck in that position. I did just that with mine and one of my first purchases was the new ignition switch and a dollar-store set of allen wrenches to install it with.)

I have an '82 & love it. I ride without the top truck & fairing lowers. Those 84's have great highway gearing overall. Your going to love tbat bike.

Lots of interesting info thanks. The seat needs repaired and guy told me he fixed the windshield and added the bags when he got it so was dee-kayed at some point I guess. I might take them off but keep them for trips. Yes I have read up on the petcock and was most likely gonna replace it anyways like my friend said to. Was gonna buy dip today but damn paycheck didn't come in today now have to wait till monday. Goal was to have it back together in a week but looks like might take a little longer now.

I do believe floats are the culprit here carbs overall aren't too bad haven't got the jets out yet though.

Yeah I have the wife all excited for going on some trips now. Bike even came with a couple small helmets and they fit her well. I gotta get some more riding experience under my belt before risking her life too though. Most my riding experience is just the ohio course which I passed no problem 3 years ago.

Ah, explains why the somethings don't match each other ... somewhat.

The bags and trunk match that tank, assuming the black was original before the yellow added.
It is the fairing that doesn't match.

If take bags off, then dont have turn rear signals.
If take fairing off, then dont have front turnsignals nor a headlight.
