It seems like a lot of trouble to get the best results.

Why not take Chuck's advice on the repairs to the starter clutch? After all, you don't know what you have that is the cause of the noises.

    Just my two cents.

I have to agree with the consensus... It sounds like the engine you have in it runs well, and just needs some repair. Putting an unknown engine in it may open up even more problems. Besides the fact of keeping the bike as original as can be. Just sounds like more work, money, and wife griping if you run into problems with the replacement... Good luck either way...

DITTO. You're basically taking what is essentially a two-hour solution and making it an all-day job.

I would go for the starter clutch first. You'll know as soon as you destruct it whether or not that is the source of your noise.

Also, going from a VM motor to a CV motor, you'll have some difficulty getting the tank to fit as the petcock will likely not clear the tops of the CV carbs. And to complicate things even further the petcocks are not interchangeable.

          Hi to all,
After listening to everyone, I got the bike back on the work bench. I decided not to change the motor and use the replacement one as spares.
I stripped the starter clutch off and it was all pretty well had it.
I stripped the starter clutch off of the replacement engine and it all looked fine, so I have fitted it.
Upon starting the bike up the noise has gone, but only to be replaced with another noise this time coming from the clutch.
I then stripped the clutch down and found the springs in the back of the basket to be very loose. Back over to the replacement engine, I removed the clutch to find that the basket had been modified with stronger springs. So I have fitted that. Started the bike and it sounds lovely.
The bike has cheap pod filters fitted and when I open the throttle it is not happy until the revs get up a bit, so at the moment I have put some duck tape round part of the pods to restrict the air flow a bit. This is a vast improvement, so I am now thinking of going back to an original air box.
I have taken it round the block and the motor is very quiet and the bike pulls very well, although my wife says that the stubby Harris pipe is very loud.
I am nearly there now. I have fitted a pair of mirrors and I have changed the speedo for an MPH one, as the bike came with a KPH one. Next week I am hoping to get an MOT on the bike and start to use it.
So I now have a few of questions.
Does anyone have a complete air box to suit my bike for sale and is there anything I can do to make the exhaust quieter and can anyone explain why my bike has a steering lock in the side of the headstock but all the suzuki website do not show one there. the reason for asking is that there is no key, so I need to get something.
          Regards Clive

First I've seen this thread, nice bike, I've never heard of a steering lock on the side of the headstock, have you found an airbox? They turn up on ebay occasionally.

Don't say can't, as anything is possible with time and effort, but, if you don't have time things get tougher and require more effort.

              Hi tatu,
I have not got an airbox yet, I have been looking on a Suzuki parts supplier here in the UK today and the part numbers are the same for the S, EC and EN models so that would make it easier. There is one on ebay at the moment but it does not have the cover where the filter goes in. Suzuki do not seem to supply them seperately.
I am not surprised you have not heard of a steering lock in the headstock, but it's there.
Thanks for the comment about the bike, I like it, I cannot afford a standard one as they go for quite a bit over here. But it is sometimes nice to be different.
              Regards Clive

Maybe just get the bits as they become available on ebay, one thing to look out for is that the carb rubbers need to be good condition though I read here that gs750 ones fit ok. Mine had a mutilated top cover for a long time.

Hi tatu, I have been thinking along those lines tonight.
I am sure I could make a cover until an original one turns up.
                  Regards Clive
