    gkollar introduction

    Hi!

I purchased a 1978 GS500 nearly 2 years ago, along with another bike for spares. Both were in a very-very sad condition, and to be honest still are. I finally have some free time to work on them, up to now they were just sitting in the corner of my small workshop. The previous owner started a cafe racer conversion, so the frame is cut and in no condition to be restored to 100% original. So it's more of a project bike.

I'm nearly 30, not new to motorcycles (but until recently I only had 2Ts) and also have some experience with vehicles. I restored a few bikes from the 60's and 70's, I worked as an aircraft mechanic for years, and actually work at the local car/engine factory in Győr, Hungary.

The GS is disassembled and on shelves, in paper boxes. But I have a picture from the last owner, this was the one in the ad:

I already read some useful things on this Forum, so I would like to thank everyone for it.

      Thanks.

And far as I can tell it's everywhere. I like costumization, but not the "chop the rear of the frame, cut off every holder for the battery box, rear brake cylinder, seat and everything to look clean" way.
On my GS the mount for the brake pedal shaft and the horizontal bar going to the rear footpeg were both cut. I got the replacement (from a bent frame) and will get it welded back. Headlight brackets are bent and 4-5 holes drilled for unknown reasons, both fenders "modified", wiring harness repaired with tape at 1-1 1/2 inch intervals and so on... I guess "basket case" is the proper term. But I have some free time, a small bike junkyard to source parts from and tools to do it, so it will be on the road in March is everything goes well.

Thanks. Also for inserting the picture in a normal size - the bike restoration forum I visit every day (a Hungarian site) uses the same forum engine, but I can't get used to it.

Yes, thank you. Read it several times in the last 6 months, I'm the type who likes to tighten every single bolt with a torque wrench.
