new to forum with new to me 1983 gs1100e
Whats up everybody. New to the forum here. recently bought a 1983 gs1100e on craigslist for cheap, knowing it was going to need some work before hitting the road. the guy had left it sitting in his garage for several years, but thankfully he drained the gas tank, so the inside of the tank isnt all varnished up. there are some cosmetic problems to take care of but nothing that i dont think i can fix by myself. all the tabs are broken off the rear fairing. that seems to be pretty common. battery was dead, put a new one in and some fresh gas and it started up, but not running the smoothest. new spark plugs improved it more. previous owner put a set of pod filters and a yoshimura exhaust on it. currently waiting on a set of carburetor rebuilds and a stainless steel carb fastener kit to get this project started. heres a picture of the bike when i brought it home last weekend.

Welcome to the funhouse... Blue 1100e bikes seem to be popping up here a lot lately. Good luck with it. A much abused third hand 83 1100e is what got me hooked on old GSs years ago.
Where are you located?sigpic
When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

Welcome Nitro! My wife is a Lompoc girl so I have a sense where you are. There are a couple of members in Santa Barbara that you might want to contact, one being Chef and the other Posplayer. I'm sure you'll have a blast with that bike once you get it running right. Cheers!

thanks i'm looking foward to getting it on the road. unfortunately the more i dig into this project the more problems i'm finding. particularly with electrical. going through the carburetors right now. i ordered k&l rebuild kits, but discovered the the needle/ seat and idle screw assemblies are both wrong in the kits. sending those back and getting an o-ring kit and bowl gaskets. where can i get some new idle mixture screws? i saw that z1 has kits, but they are k&l part numbers, which has me spooked considering the low quality of their rebuild kit

I'm sure you're getting a sense, if you don't already fully know, that the '83 11e is a much-desired bike (even the slower blue model ).
By "rear fairing," I'm assuming you mean the side covers? I have a nice-sized collection of those, including, IIRC, a set of '83 blues. Hopefully, soon I'll have no use for them (a member is preparing two sets of '83 reds for me).
Good luck with the project.1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red
