GS1000 Cafe Racer project in Oklahoma

Hi just wanted to introduce myself, I'm Roger, a new owner of an old 1979 GS1000L that I am doing a mild cafe racer styling on.

bought off craigslist for $400.00 with bad wiring. I have sorted most of it out, and cleaned it up and have it had it running, however as i was working on the wiring in the headlamp bucket, the coil started to smoke. (have no clue what swapping the wires to the turn signals did to cause this) but now the 1-4 coil is getting power all the time if the run switch is on and the coil heats to smoking and the lights dim and starter does not engage.
