    Alan

Slow to introduce myself but I'm from Ohio, I'm 56 years old and I bought an '83 gs1100gl about 3 years ago. In '87 I owned an '82 gs850gl but I didn't learn much about tooling on them because it was spotless. I sold it in '94 due to financial issues.
When I regained composure and looked for another my wife suggested I wait until the kids were grown as to not leave any orphans. So I did. That was 20 some years ago. A friend I rode with had the bike I now own. I finally talked him out of it after 20 years sitting in a barn. It's not so clean but I just wanted to ride again.
I've decided to clean it up a bit as I've bought a near pristine exhaust and now have more in the bike than I'll get out of of it.
I'm looking forward to fixing this mostly because I've learned so much from this site and have seen some of your bike's and have become just downright envious.
I tried to post a picture, I hope it comes through, I'm not the sharpest with websites.

    Alan,

    Welcome to GSR.

Thanks for introducing yourself, complete with picture of bike.

Not bad for sitting in barn for 20 years.
Looks like the exhaust suffered the worse.

How did it go finding a good set of exhaust for replacement?

Am thinking of a few Ohio GSR members somewhat in your area, a couple on other side of Cleveland, an some near Dayton..... not sure if any closer than that to you.

Check out meeting place, GSR rally in about 3 weeks.
Bedford Indiana, would be about 300 miles for you.

    Do post more pictures.
And do tell of more of your adventures with the GS.

Thank you. Absolute pleasure to be here. I have some rust to take care of on the frame before I put the exhaust on but i found this exhaust on GSR and im excited to clean this bike up because of you guys. I want to ride this season so I'll do the teardown work this winter. This bike is definitely salvageable as it had only 6400 miles on it when I bought it. But the neglect looks like much more. Again, I really appreciate the knowledge and wisdom in this GS community.

Welcome Alan, try to get that bike going as soon as you can, but don't skip anything on the Newbies list. It's no fun waiting for a tow, or worse...
1A) (NEW) Trying to diagnose running problems on a bike with an unknown maintenance history. Common maintenance items like clean carbs, properly adjusted valves, no air leaks in the intake system (airbox, carb boots), a clean gas tank (no rust), and a properly functioning petcock are 100% mandatory for the bike to run properly.

I have personally made ALL of those mistakes, and more. Fixing up a GS is fun and easy, easier the more you do

Thanks bobgroger, the bike does run but due to the newbie mistakes I made before I found this site I'll have to do some minor tuning. Such as valve adjust BEFORE carbs.
And Redman I want to know more about the Indiana rally. I may try and make it.
