New member! 1982 GS750T

New member here saying hi!

After a short hiatus of riding a motorcycle, i found myself missing the thrill of it and decided to get back on two wheels. Ive only ridden for about two seasons so im a fairly novice rider.

I started looking on craigslist and found a 82 GS750T for $250 on craigslist. It was too good for me to pass up so i ended up getting it. Ill be the third owner of this motorcycle and it also comes with complete records since the purchase from the dealer. The previous owner said it was sitting since 2008 so its currently not running. Im not an expert mechanic but i have a set of tools, a service manual and this amazing forum so i shouldnt have any issues, right? Haha.


I know i have a lot of work ahead of me to get it running and looking the way i want it to but I figured its cheaper than therapy and ill learn something new along the way. I look forward to gaining some knowledge and inspiration on this forum !

The 16V 750 Engine is a true brute but has some things to keep an eye out for. They aren't as robust as most GS engines so be weary and take good care of it. The 750 is a bigger bike, very similar to the 1100's in stature. I loved my 81 750L when I had it and grew into a Bandit 1200 after I retired it.

Well, right off the bat I notice you have the correct headlight and seat as well as turn signals and original shocks. Looks like you got a 4-1 pipe that's a little burned out. I was missing side covers too but they never fit proper and I cracked them every time I moved the bike so I kept em' off.

Your handle bars look swayed back and need to come up a little too. Lots of cleaning and maintenance to do. Post a pic on this thread as well.

Welcome to GSR.

Buying a non running bike can be multiple problems. What ever the original problem was, then plus problems from sitting so long, like carburators clogged up.
But, you seem to know that, hand have a good attitude about it.

Look back on homepage, find In THe Garage, look for Carb Cleaning series.

Looks like a good deal.
Lots of folks likke the Ts. Has the sporty engine, and has the more chrome like an L, but not the small tank of an L.

Do post more of your adventure with it.

You say you have a service manual.
If you have a factory Suzuki manual, I suggest you also get a Clymers.
If you have a Clymers, i suggest you also get a Suzuki factory manual.
If you have a Hayse, I suggest you get a Clymers and a Suzuki factory manual.

I've been quite busy since buying "Lil Agnus" so i haven't touched her till today. I now finally have some free time to work on her!.

I was tempted to pour some fuel in the tank and attempt to start it but i decided against it. Not too sure what the first steps should be but I figured id clean the carbs first before starting it.

I ended up doing a compression test first. The numbers (fell between 145-150PSI on all 4) which seems to be within the numbers in the manual, though the manual does say to warm up the engine first before testing so im not sure if that will have any major affects on the numbers. I was relieved that the motor cranks and that the piston rings weren't seized / rusted from sitting so long but i am still a bit concerned.

Could the rings still be rusted or in bad shape if it sat for a long time? If so, would i still be able to crank it?


After that, the air box and carbs came off and disassembly began . Boy was it dirty. I had a few issues with some tough screws since i wasn't using an impact driver. All 4 pilot screws are still in and are on the verge of stripping so i decided to stop and reattack it after i get an impact driver. I hope that will do the trick because I ended up stripping a pilot jet, but i was lucky enough to get it out. I wasnt too worried because i wanted to put pod filters and it has a 4 to 1 exhaust; I read somewhere that i have to re-jet it so this sorta worked out in my favor.

My "T's" pipes weren't that bad...shaved off about 30lbs too!

EDIT: I have an "L" seat (in case you didn't notice) but a second "T" with the correct seat and a picture of it. It's in the link I shared with you to post pics of your "T".

I finally found my receipt from Z1 for the V&H/4-1 pipes: $318 in March of 2014. That's a good price considering what the prices are now.

Now, to find how much I paid for the rear Progressive Shocks.

Yes, you can pull the header off and clean them up with a wire wheel on a 4" grinder. then spray 2-3 coats of high temp header paint. will look great and last a few seasons before it needs it again...
The '83 750 engine has some poor oiling issues. There is a mod for it though. Shimming the pressure relief valve with a washer or two.

Anyway, VERY nice find. Wish mine was only $250 up front... You will find it to be a terrific bike. Fast and fun... Good luck ! ! !

I think you will not find them in the parts fische, nor find any mention of them in the factory servioce manaul.
My thereoy is that they did not exisit as far as anything relative to emmission and passing US requirements are concerned. When new they had a cap over them so were not accessable.

Ive read that some people drilled out the old ones but i think ill hold off on that and see how it runs first.

Quick question with the "T"

I know that the idle screw is pre-set from the factory and i was wondering if i need to sync it since it is already preset.
The reason why i ask is that the idle screws are pretty stripped and might need to be drilled out, which i dont want to do to prevent further damages. I haven't hooked it up to a vacuum synchronizer yet but the bike starts, runs, and idles.

I would appreciate any advice!. Thanks!

Don't be too concerned about the rings and pistons. My bike sat for 20 years. Before firing it up I filled up the spark plug holes with oil and let it sit for a winter while I worked on everything else. Put fresh oil in before starting and drained it again after 100 km. Then changed it again after 500 Km.just to get any residual rust out. It took a few gentle tugs on the crank to get it moving at first. It has been running for 5 years now without any problems.
