New to the forum, new to riding, GS700E
My name's Caleb, I'm new to the forum and new to bikes. I bought my first bike, a 1985 GS700E, just this weekend. Snagged it for $950, had some issues, but nothing too bad for a 30+ year old bike. Decide to try and ride it home, dropped it, killed my stator cover and ultimately got it towed home. Bike has it's issues, but I look forward to learning, fixing and riding the hell out of this. There seems to be a massive amount of quality information within this forum and I'm excited to be a part of itTags: None

Welcome Caleb,
Too bad about dropping the bike. These vintage bikes do not come with frame sliders but do have engine guards...I'm guessing yours does not. Anyway, post pics of your bike and take the MSF course before you get the bike up and running. Also, gear up and become familiar with how to move your bike without dropping it. Let me also recommend finding a MSF course.... not because you dropped it, just because you said first bike.
Good that you did not have to describe damage to YOU.
Do post pics.
Do keep us updated to your progress.

Money was tight so I didn't take the class, like a dumbass. It's get better when I realized the tow home was only $30 less than the class. Definitely taking the class come payday. And as far as gear goes, I invested in a good helmet, decent jacket and gloves and have plans to get kevlar pants, riding boots and a better gloves. Pictures to be posted later today. Thanks for all the response though! Very encouraging. ALSO, where can I find a a set of engine guards? I'll definitely need them as I am liable to drop this heavy bike before I figure out what I'm doing.

Welcome and good luck. The 700e is a cool bike.sigpic

Welcome to the site Caleb. Dropping a bike sucks, but in my eyes its a way of determining if you've chosen a bike that's too big for you... I figure you should never own a bike that's so big (heavy) that if it falls over you can't pick it back up by yourself with an injured leg... lol!
The safety courses are really good. I rode when I was a kid (a looooong time ago) and then owned a couple bikes over the years as an adult but never took the classes. When I got the GS a few years ago I decided to take the class. It taught me some things I didn't know, reminded me of stuff I had forgotten, and made me look at the dangers of riding from a different viewpoint. It also saves a bunch of money in tickets and insurance over not taking the class. :-)1982 GS1100E "Jolene"
