Just picked up a 78 GS550 off of Craigslist. Guy said he road it daily without problems. I knew right away it was going to need a chain soon. Adjustments maxed. Road it to town and back and went back out and found a dead battery. I found this site trying to diagnose the charging system. I printed off the stator paper and found the stator is only putting out on one of the three poles. So, time to put in a new stator. It is a great running little bike but a bit disappointed about being lied to.

I already have a new Shinko back tire, chain, sprockets, and some hard bags. I have an original Wixom Ranger fairing I will be installing as well.

I've just about got the bags installed and will be putting the fairing on when I get it painted black.

0 VAC at two poles? Well the PO is a nasty fellow.
Nice bike though it will run well soon enough.

      Welcome to the site, Bart.
Got to ask, what is the story behind the name Goofy Ridge?

Goofy Ridge is the closest town to me. Odd name but it is an actual place.

Well, thanks to the "stator papers " I diagnosed the no charge problem to the stator. I got one off of Amazon. The stator works fine and now have 12.75 volts at idle and 13.5 off idle. I have the side bags mounted and working on the fairing now.

Try to do the SH775 Series regulator ASAP. The Shunt regulator is what killed the stator. Also, bypass the headlight loop, all 3 stator wires should go directly to
            the RR. Otherwise this happens:
