Hi everyone, after lurking for a while I knew I had to get a bike so I could be part of the forum.

So this is it: Just bought a GS1000 probably from 1978, though it was first registered in '79.( It seems we couldn't get enough of them in '78 so they started importing form other countries mainly Germany I believe).
I'm the second owner. The po and his wife travelled all over Europe with it, so it's well travelled. 50.000 + miles. But no smoke , no oil consumption and everything works.


A few things need sorting.
Clean up the electrics.
Find a 78 tank instead of the GS1100 one on it now and replace all the rubber. Ie tyres, intake booths handgrips etc.

The picture shows the lower part of the (very nice ) homemade fairing that the po made for it.

Welcome to GSR Hatch. Sounds like you're on the right track with a real nice bike. 50K miles should have it beginning to break in nicely.

Yup. But i like to think it's a bit less brash than our national colour More subtle kinda.

Not being a fairing (or lowers) guy myself, I'm going to have to look up what "very nice" means in your language.

I usually end up stripping off, or otherwise undoing most everything previous owners have done, but to each his own.

Although the fairing kept me dry during a cloudburst on teh way home, I'm taking it off.
I have an FJR1300 for touring so I'm keeping her naked

LOL, The upper part of the fairing can just be seen behind the bike.
I'll see if I have some pictures of it. It'actually a home made copy of a Jos Schurgers Design fairing the 990S.
The po actually made some nice changes to it. For instance the round holes you can see in the lower part of the fairing housed some spotlight fom Cibié.
The weight of the fairing was offset by his passengers. So a GS550 would leave it for dead accelerating but it has a much, much higher top speed than standard.
Ideal for when he went cruising down to the south of france on the Autobahn.

It's not really to my taste but the execution is faultless. As it should be really, he was a moldmaker that also did some stuff for a bunch of Apache attack helicopters the Dutch army has.

The bike's going back to original.
And to that end I just scored a '78 fuel tank for € 50 yesterday. It's not perfect, a few holes behind where the logos sit but it should be easy to braze or weld it closed.
It's been dry for a spell (years) so no fumes to worry about.
