    early gs450?

    hi guys
im here for abit of help and generally more help
i normally lean towards hondas but today my pal rocked up with a barn fresh 1980 gs450 in black and red pin stripes...

first reg in uk march 1980 showing low miles on the clock backed up with old mot's
i think it is a bog standard e model...
i also think it may be a very early one vin is 500xxx..
so first question is is it a early production bike
it is very original and all seems to be there
also what are the spares like for this model?
starter seems stuck is this repairable ?

sorry for any poor grammer or spelling im on a small phone and fat thumbs
    pics to hopefully follow

That's a cool bike, and welcome to the GSR.

Hi, woodside. I thought you in UK only got the GSX 400 model (it has square cam end covers) but apparently I am wrong unless someone brought that over from somewhere else...oh well, this who-got-what-where is not as useful as knowing how to fix it!

Yes, many parts are available for that bike. You will find yourself looking at American sites mostly but I think you will find closer Euro sites too.
You can go here for instance
✓ Suzuki spare parts for GS450 Motorcycle. ✓ Swift delivery ✓ Original Suzuki GS450 parts

Yes, the starters often stick after sitting around. Taking it out and taking it apart and putting it back together often does it. You will want to remove the cam-chain tensioner to get the starter out I think (I havethe very similar but not exactly so-GSX400E) You can find brush assemblies online if you find they are worn...

You will want a manual...Likely Haynes is the one you will see most often thereabouts? but it is really for the GSX 400s with a mere addendum for 450s...Even so, grab it if cheap because chassis, body carbs and much more are very very similar in both engine sizes..
But you can find a specific Clymer manual for 450s here at BassCliff's site...it's the 80mb download "400-450 77-87".
            MUCH else pertinent there too

The 450 is one of the most common of all GS bikes in the USA. They made them for a lot of years so parts availability is good for a 38 year old bike. I'm not sure about all that in the UK though, although I'm pretty sure you won't have problems finding basic parts.

                cheers guys
i am told these were in the uk back in the 80's and is a E01
but it is scarce over here...
i have just come in from the garage and yes i need to get the starter out...
i tried everyway possible and came to the conclusion the chain adjuster needs to come off...
any tips or is it as simple as the 2 10mm bolts...
the motor wont spin at all not even with 12v direct onto the back of it...

                cheers for the replys
