New guy here from Asheville NC!

I have been riding for several years and have only owned more modern bikes (several flavors of the FZ1), but since I was young I have been drawn to early 80's bikes. For reference, I was born in 84' so I missed seeing all those sweet rides fresh out of the showroom. Well, a few weeks ago, I finally told myself it was time, and it must have been meant to be, because as soon as I opened craigslist, this beauty had only been posted for about 2 hours and was calling my name. I spoke with the owner and took the next day off work to go and ride it. As with most bikes this old, it has a few bugs that need to be worked out ( cam chain tensioner assembly oil leak, terrible routing of clutch cable has it tight as a banjo string, and the tires were eleven years old). I slapped some new skins on her last weekend, bled the brakes down and replaced pads, changed the oil, lubed the chain and hit the road. I have put 450 miles on her this week and have loved every minute. The thing runs like a champ and doesn't miss a beat. Smooth and healthy. My plan is to ride it hard all fall, while my FZ sits in the basement, and when winter rolls around I am gonna tear into her and get back to tip top shape for next spring. It is like one of my biggest childhood fantasies has been realized. I doubt I could have found a better place for the info that I am going to most definitely be in need of. Just thought I'd introduce myself.

I am very fortunate to live around such great mountain roads. Within 20 minutes of hwy 276 and 215 and 151, 30 minutes from 209 "the rattler" and about an hour from deals gap "tail of the dragon ." And we are finally having some decent weather!

Nice! You have the BRP within minutes of you, a common destination of mine (from Chicago area).

I travel a full day each direction just to reach your area, so in decent weather I'm envious. In rotten weather, I have to wonder how many of you folks even get out of your driveways, jeez, with 15% (or worse) grades to a highway entrance! One after another... Some of these must require almost full-throttle launches on dry pavement, to get onto the roadway with moderate traffic. What do you do if it's snowy or even wet?

I digress. Gorgeous new machine. Hope it's as fun as it looks!

Funny you mention that. Our local MSF courses stress the importance of just that skill. I took it years ago, and they had everyone lined up out there on a super steep hill learning to merge from a stop on a steep incline. I couldn't believe how many bikes were dropped during just that one exercise. Next time you are down this way shoot me a message and I would be more than happy to show you around some local roads that are truly hidden gems.

Nice looking bike! Is the engine from '81 bike? I like the cut outs on rear peg brackets and blocked anti dive units

I believe the motor is original to the bike. 39k miles. Anti dive was bypassed a long time ago.
