Howdy!, just got my new to me GS650G Saturday,see was browsing FB market place the other day and this ad for a 1981 GS650G popped up, my son and I have been wanting a UJM for some time, we have plenty of bikes alreay, from a Super Tenere , SV650, CBR1000rr, and a couple of dirtbikes we were bike poor and "needed" this one, So the feller who was selling it just happens to come into my work (autoParts) and i ask about it, turns out it belonged to my neighbor long long ago and I knew how well he took care of his bikes. The seller was needing two wheel bearing assemblys for a 1ton 4x4 truck , but only had the $ for one, later that night i pm'd him if he would trade another bearing and some $ for the bike. He bit and we were both happy, He said the bike ran back in Aug, but i think his grandkids trying to jump start and what not has knocked the ignition out of it, But don't worry, new Dynatek will be here Thursday,

plans are to keep it like this until after Barber Vintage and then look for the proper headlight and turn signal assemblys to put it back, one of the draw backs is it's had a rock go through the windshield, I think i'll tape one side then put in some clear epoxy to at least patch it, new shield is $350

I doubt that but maybe it's a sexier place than I think! Looks like a real deal! That humungous fairing-that's a keeper even if you take it off in the summer- the big saddlebags make the "look" work.

I've got a 650 too so I'll mention a couple of things specific to the marque. First, go here at BikeCliff's Website
a lot of stuff is common across the bikes...so if you don't find it about GS650, look at the 850s and so on from there.

-You may hear the cam knocking in the top at low rpm. general wisdom is: Don't worry- it's "cam-walk" and an oddity that doesnt seem to hurt anything.
-The shaft drive-well, that's a bit more to keep an eye on. Look up "zook's syndrome". The symptom and search term is "whining"...like an old English car in reverse is my analogy...
-Also, the ring gear in the rear hub has good years and bad years apparently. Personally, I havent had this issue. Maybe it's the fancy $$$ molybdenum $$$ grease (from Honda) or just good luck.
-The original regulator (the "R/R") is also considered to be a weakness that burns out stators... There's a forum favourite replacement but I've done well with an old goldwing's R/R on all my bikes.

PS You can run the bike from a car battery while you sort the electrics. That setup looks a bit precarious

well with 35xxx miles if the rear has had any problems it should have alread shown up, as for the reg/rec, it's alread has what looks to be a Rick's universal rectifier from back in -'99 , so i prob assume it's had the stator changed too,

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have enough experience already so this new to you 650G should be a piece of cake. Exactly where in the Ozarks do you reside? Near what town? East Ozarks or the West side of the state?

Several of us on this forum have a meet up in Farmington usually in September. Would be nice to meet another Suzuki owner.

Nice to see another AERO fairing.

Once you get the bike sorted, you will appreciate the fairing. Not nearly as large or heavy as a Vetter, has plenty of protection. I have really enjoyed mine. You can click on the link in my sig to see a picture of it.

Windshields for the fairing are not THAT expensive. Used ones come up on eBay from time to time. I have a search saved that lets me know when one is available, but don't need one at the moment.
