From what little I know, GS bikes are scarce and expensive in WA

I’d do it on whatever Japanese bike you can find… KLR, Dr650, drz400 etc
one of the benefits or picking a slightly newer (but using the same old tech) bike like one of those two is that you won’t be as afflicted by age related problems.. rubber rot and hardening of O rings, brake lines, electrical insulation and the like.
The basic tech is all stuff you would recognise from the GS on those so familiarity for repairs/maintenance.1980 GS1000G - Sold
