First fender bender.
I picked up my first gs (1981 gs650gl) in the beginning of march as my second bike, because I don't like paying for insurance on my cbr (now track toy). (Plus my dad caught me riding down I-70 on one wheel last summer while I was coming to work for him one day. OOPS.) Anyways, I've been riding it (the gs) 70 miles round trip to my internship every day it doesn't rain, and every other weekend from omaha ne to manhattan ks to keep my job as a bartender in aggieville(7th ranked college bar scene in the nation according to fhm, ask me if it's fun.) until I go back full time to KSU. I was driving down a main road (75/30th st) in the left lane of the two to choose from behind a great big black dodge ram. He slams on his brakes and tries to run the car beside him over swerving into the right lane. Obviously I got on mine as soon as I saw the brake lights, then released momentarily when he got over, then slammed on them again when I realized that he swerved for the escort he later came back to say had locked em up to turn left. I'm still trying to decide if it was the case, and haven't picked up the bike to see if I'm right, but I'm pretty sure that I pinned that front brake to the throttle and it didn't lock up, and afterwards it was commented that the master cylinder was leaking even though it had no signs of impact, and I should have had time to stop. Anyhow, my estimation is 25 miles an hour at impact, which would be verified by the distance I flew when I dove off the bike and over the car right as I hit his bumper, and by the mesh jacket that I burned a hole in while sliding. I walked away with only a few stitches etc, by God's grace. I'm an idiot lesson learned, but what I really wanted to comment on was the exemplary comradery one of your gsers showed. While the police report was being filled out, one of your super site supporters, (:arrowmaha rj\\/) stopped on his way home from work and offered transportation for me and the bike to his house, where he's allowing me to store it until tommorrow because I had to go back to KS for my health insurance cards, and to get my knee scoped. And to top it all off he spent another 30 minutes of his life driving me to the ER after we'd dropped the bike off and he'd given me a bottle of water. If you read this RJ, thanks again. I'd probably give him the bike, but then I wouldn't be a part of this amazing group any more. It'll be a while though before it's road ready. I bent the frame and I need to find an 83 with the dual front discs, etc before I can put it back on the road. That guy's bumper is toast though ha ha. And from now on I know to test the brakes hard so I don't find out AFTER I hit someone.Tags: None

First and foremost, Thank goodness you're okay!!:-D
Secondly, you don't need a GS to be a member, so don't pour money into trying to ressurect a broken bike if you don't want to. Use it, or sell it, for parts on another GS.
And good on ya Omaha!!=D>
