Yep, is many things I can say about taking a person for thier first ride, but that is beyound the topic here, but the "standing on the pegs" is one I will mention becuse when my son took his girlfriend (now wife) for 1st ride that is one thing she didnt do and burnt herself bad - still has something of a scar 5 years later.

Nate, thank for posting, that wasnt so long. I enjoyed it.

What a great story, Nate!! Sounds like you are doing a great job of letting her take this at her own pace. Don't be disappointed if there are times that she doesn't feel like it, but it sounds like she's hooked already!!!

As much as I love riding my own, I still like being a passenger, too, and I know my buddy Charlie prefers having a passenger. It's nice to have someone to talk to and point out things going on around you. Congrats!!

Good job in making it fun for her.

I didn't get into bikes until age 50 about 4 years ago. Prior to that i was not interested and it dates back to age about 6 when my dad took me out on his 250 BSA. Dad was a dirt track rider and engine builder and I think his bikes were pretty hot. Hot enought to scare the bejezus out of me. He didn't want me into bikes and I think he did his best to scare me. It worked.

At age 3o a buddy at work got a new Honda 450 and took me out as passenger. Unfortunately he didn't give me any pointers and I damn near fell of the back. He did everything to scare and **** me off...and he succeeded. I never looked at bikes again.

I haven't got the wife on the back yet but I know that if and when i do I'll work up to it. Baby steps is the best way and take care of her. Proper gear, talk about what will happen, devise signals for communication and....take it slow!!!

Good work you've likely created another bike luvva!

        Cheers,

          maybe next year?

Hey good story! My wife had her first ride with a coworker last year --the same guy that got me hooked on motorcycles. She has been pregnant most of this year and hasn't been on the bike. There isn't room for 3 on a GS650GL!

I think I'll be getting her some gear over the winter in case she wants to go around the block or so.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that a lot of people have issues with lack of control that inhibits their ability to do things. I do.

Back in the day when I started driving, I found I was never comfortable having a buddy drive ( mostly because they were all leadfoots and testosterone laced idiots to boot). and on the bike ride with my buddy I was powerless.

Now being able to ride myself, I would never be able to ride on the back unless there was absolutely no other alternative. I think this is also why I hate to fly and likely should take flying lessons.

Just wanted to pass that on as I'm sure some other folks feel the same.

            cheers,
            spyug.

I am the same way. I hate driving with my brother behind the wheel... but I think that is because he finds it necessary to tempt fate every time he goes out....

fortunately, Katie is fine with handing me the keys to her car (especially when I DONT want to drive:-D) and she trusts me to do my best to keep her safe.

I have never promised to keep her safe. I cant control the cars around me, and there are too many factors, both in the car and on the bike, to make a promise like that. I do promise to do my best to keep her safe.

                Congrats!

To both of you! Sounds like you've increased our ranks. Well done! Don't forget to adjust the suspension and tire pressure!

                As an aside:

Not everyone is meant to be on a bike. IMHO, if they have no interest in riding, then I believe they shouldn't ride...at all. I've never pressured anyone to ride...ever. However, if someone expresses even a hint of interest, I'll do everything I can to share what I think I know about how to get started safely (MSF BRC is usually the first thing out of my face).

You ever see the Show "That 70's Show" when Red gets a Honda and Kitty is against it until after her first ride. They pull into the drive after the first ride and she is sitting there with this stupid grin on her face saying lets go again Red. oooooo Rev it up again Red ooooo I like this. We can keep it.

                            Hey, Nate,
Good job, glad she liked the ride. My wife and I were discussing this and many other things dealing with piloting different vehicles/vessels the other night. I wasn't comfortable riding in a small Grumman two seater with her as pilot years ago, but she's always been comfortable in any vehicle, two or four wheels that I've taken her as a passenger in, as well as any boats (except my sailboat sailing on the beam....). She has especially enjoyed riding pillion through the mountains on my bike, gave her the same feeling of freedom she had flying an airplane.
Good job, Nate, keep her safe, and interested.:-D
