my 750 faster than a new bike?

i went for a ride with my friends on monday afternoon. the weather was perfect! about 65 out and little breezy. i hadnt seen these guys since high school and just recently found out they both have bikes. so i called one and asked if they wanted to go for a ride.

well we rode probably about 50-60 miles total.... good long ride on lots of twisty roads....

the roads we were on were actually my old high school bus route, so we all new every curve. these guys were both pretty wild in high school, ryan has a cbr600rr and a lot of experience and brandon has a new gsxr600. we started out riding with those 2 in front and me in the rear, but they were both just cruising along like a couple of newbs.. what the crap???

i got in the back cause i am some what new to street riding and expected these guys to push it a little harder than me, but no. we were on some great twisty roads and neither one pushed his bike at all....

so i passed them both. i was carving it up pretty good in the old 750.. not dangerously but enough that i know my limits and when to let off. i was no where near what i know my bike will do.

i would have to stop every now and then and wait quite a while before these guys caught up. i just dont get it. i spent maybe 1200 getting my bike to where its at, and i love every turn in it!! these guys dropped probably 6k or more into their bikes and neither one wants to enjoy it???

neither bike is modded, and my 750 was pretty easily pulling away from them... i know their top speeds are like 50-60 mph higher, and they can do wheelies all day, but c'mon. i didnt expect my bike to be able to stay anywhere near these guys. it really surprised me.

any way thats the end of my confusion i guess. it just caught me off gaurd how relaxed these guys were on the ride, and how fast my bike actually is.

    Sorry, they're just Newbs.
    There's no sport in it.
    I wouldn't have waited.

It's not the bike, it's the Rider. I chased down a couple of Guys on Honda RRs last Year over on 232 in Tennessee (AKA the "Little" Dragon) on My 850. It made Me smile when they waved Me around but My Bike ain't faster than those things!:-D
      sigpic2002 KLR650 Ugly but fun!
2001 KLR650 too pretty to get dirty

Life is a balancing act, enjoy every day, "later" will come sooner than you think. Denying yourself joy now betting you will have health and money to enjoy life later is a bad bet.

You've obviously got superior riding skill. Maybe they need to take a break from spending money and actually learn how to ride? ;-)

Riding a bike is 90% rider, 10% bike, especially in the twisties. For example, both Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi both ride identical bikes in MotoGP racing for Ducati this year.

            Capirossi:

            Stoner:

Ducati has arguably the fastest bike on the track this year, hands down.

In the overall standings, Stoner is in 1st, Capirossi is in 8th, both riding the same rocket ship with handlebars.

It's a testament to Stoner's skill and the fact that it's the rider, not the machine, that makes the difference.

While your GS750 isnt faster than their bikes, it does probably have a bit more low end grunt than theirs. Those new sport bikes are all about top end. My 77 GS750B is bored to 836, has a 45 (OEM was 41) tooth rear sprocket on it and it can easily dust my GF's CBR600 till about third gear in a straight line...then she hits her torque band and i run out of gears quickly..Also don't forget that you have 150cc's on em too. And as stated above it's alot to do with the rider. Yamaha RD350 Daytonas used to dust much larger bikes at the track because of the rider and the fact that they had more grunt to get back to speed out of the turns quicker. But dont for one second think your bike is faster than these new bikes. Hell a GSXR1300 does 85 in first...lol

well i know they have way better acceleration at higher speeds... anywhere over about 60mph... i wont push mine over about 90mph.. just cause its 30 years old and i dont want to blow that skinny tire out back going that fast.

but from a slow roll i was able to stay ahead of both of them, and also last week i was able to beat my other friends brand new gsxr600.

keep in mind these are in stock form. i know a slightly modded bike would blow me away no problem.

maybe its just me, it wouldnt surprise me if my friends are just too pu$$y to really lay into their bikes.

i tried to get them to ride the gs but they wouldnt, they just laughed at me. i found that stupid expecially since i had just wasted their asses in all the twisties.

i really just wanted to get on a newer crotch rocket, i have never been on a newer sport bike.

                thanks for the input guys.

i really have no idea what kind of power im putting down, stage 3 jets and V&H pipe... plus i just reassembled the top end. i dont know. they probably are faster and just dont know how to handle their bikes.

i was really surprised cause ryan did a lot of riding in high school and should have a fair amount more skill than i do.

Your friends need to learn how to ride their bikes. They have a significant weight and horsepower advantage over you, provided the rider knows how to use it. The GSXR 600 doesn't hit its powerband till 8000 RPM so it's pretty safe to say that they need to learn how to ride better and how to slip the clutch. If you got on a GSXR 600, you'd REALLY smoke them since you appear to have better cornering skill than them. A fast guy on a GS750 will beat a slow guy on a Gixxer 600 in the twisties, everytime.

                      you guys sound right.

im upset that my bike is slower, but way happier to know i have better riding skill than those 2.

its not a contest, but its just way more fun!!!!

I wouldnt worry about your back tire...i hit the ton (100 mph) on my bike quite regularly..and she doesnt even flinch.

Reminds me of the time an 05-ish viper threw a rev at my old 77 750 Honda Supersport. We went from a 25 roll until about 85 and he couldn't pull me and I couldn't pull him, but I don't have anywhere near invested what the Viper guy does, but I guaruntee if I was behind the wheel of the Viper I would have side stepped that biznatch.

I am more than certain he would have pulled me if we kept going, but when you are a decent rider and know your bikes strengths, you can make it seem like more than it really is.

What's the new GSXr redline at?

The new GSXR 750s redline at 15k RPM, the 600s at 16,500 RPM. I have a 06 GSXR 750 and it sounds like a jet turbine winding up when you get it up to redline.

Don’t kid yourself, there is no comparison between an old GS and these modern race replica bikes. I sometimes ride with a buddy that has a ‘06 ZX10. I have an 83 GS1100. We switched bikes for a while and it was like another world. Power everywhere, just ask. Breaks are just insane I was riding fast without trying. If I had time to get used to it, wow! Also had pain in my wrists and my ass hurt. Glad to get back on my GS.

On my GS I was doing steady pace but with some serious cornering speed. Modern tires, what fun, my friend behind me backed off because he thought I was on the edge seeing that old bike leaned over and hoping around on bumps on the road. No worries, I think I still had more room but it’s not safe to ride with no margin for safety in the Southern California Mountains. Save it for the track. All along I knew my buddy could pass me and leave me behind and there was nothing I could do about it.

I’ve been riding with this friend for 10+ years. He could outride me on anything. Nothing can take the place of rider skills. The few times Newbs have come along with us, only to crash or scare the crap out of us trying to rider over their heads.

Your buddies should be commended for NOT over extended their riding abilities. Too many young riders are lost this way. I got sucked into that game when I was younger!
