Oh, Deer!!!

Riding the BMW up in the mountains today, wife on the back, about 60 mph on a nice two lane highway, a herd of about 8-10 big mule deer ran across, left to right, up ahead a little. Slowed quite a bit, watching them in case they were feeling twitchy and felt like jumping back in the road.
From a hiding spot on the left, the two tail end charlies came across, fast, right at the front of the bike.
Braked real hard, the anti-lock system released at about the same time that my fingers released, so it was a big ON off ON braking event instead of a nice smooth stop with a little correction in the middle. Not sure what was happening with the back brake, think it probably didn't lock at all, not sure. That bike stops pretty darn quickly even if you don't do it quite perfectly. Got lucky this time, it was enough. Missed them both by a few feet.
Moral of the story?
Go deer hunting at every opportunity. With a rifle.

how did your wife feel about it? and how are your arms holding up?

My girlfriend and I commuted to work all of last summer together on the the 1981 gs400. it was nice getting a hug every morning but it really scared me that something might happen to her. We are very honest to each other about the risks, and her dad rides so she knows what going on, but it still worries me.

She's cool. Said she was looking at the herd and didn't even see the others until after we missed them.
My arms are fine, I do push ups and everything.

I was driving in Germany one time and had seen a fox crossing the road. It morphed into a deer when I was 20 ft from it. Foxes run across roads and stay there. This fox/deer ran to on side and was safe but decided to run infront of my car. Smack, crunch, slide, smack, crunch. Cops came, cops called the hunter. Hunter came, poked bambi then plugged her. Yeah her. Bambis mom was preggo with Bambi still inside.

My GK was destroyed in the Bambicide, which took place in December, 2001. Fortunately, the deer was killed, (and we ate her), but bike and rider both made it just fine, eventually.

Ground venison is great on chili and spaghetti sauce, but that's no way to go deer hunting...

I dont know about you Nick. It seems to me you've ascertained that a GK wasnt enough firepower and simply purchased a bigger "gun".

Here is scenic NW Indiana some of the folks in my subdivision actually feed the "antlered rats" which has helped in a population explosion. I regularly see 10 - 15 of them in the corn fields behind my house and have hit 5 in the last few years with my pickup fortunately all at low speeds. Needless to say I now am very cautious when riding or driving close to home. A few years back within a mile of my house a guy on a bike was t-boned and taken off the bike by one at full speed and it was not a good thing. They end up cleaning out the natural areas and then start in on the subdivisions. We only have the Whitetail version around here which are a lot lighter than Mule deer but they still can ruin your day.

Does your bike have ABS? Had a similar confrontation a couple of years ago in Idaho on a BMW K11LT and I believe that ABS saved us both.

I've hit two in the past year and a half and the last deer I did slap it on the ass, with the front forks of the bike. Its a nerve wracking experience to say the least.

I go every year in three states. Even got a new gun for next year. I love deer meat in every form. i think the seasons should be longer, the state parks should be opened up, and where firearms are not practical archery should be permitted wherever there is woods.

People get killed in cars by deer too. 180 lb deer comes through the windshield and you have had it. I got a 150 lb 8 point last November, that boy was huge.

I have a nice 7mm remington 700 with scope You could thin the heard out with

My Remington 700BDL is in .270, although the 7mm is a badass round. In Delaware we use rifled slugs but recently they approved handgun hunting. This winter I a taking my .44 into the tree stand and we shall see how that works.

6 inch groups at 100 yards with a scope on top. I like the flexibility of taking a deer shot at almost every angle. I missed a chance because they came in from the right and I could not get the iron turned around.

A boy got a bear near my mother's house 2 years ago with an arrow. He was deer hunting and along comes Smokey. 450lbs, it had to be quartered and driven out on ATV. Lucky shot through the neck, good thing the teenager had a bear stamp on his license or he would have had to let it walk out.

My parents have 53 acres of prime hunting ground in their back yard. Fresh water, corn and soybean fields, large herds of deer everywhere. I have pictures of 3 or 5 at a time.
