Crahed my bike today...........

This is it after the crash, I removed the fairing so between my brother-in-law, my friend Fred, and myself we could get it onto the trailer. The reason the motorhome is so high up in the air is because I'm in the middle of removing the old Cummins and replacing it with a new higher HP engine with an intercooled turbine.

Your supposed to crash in the late fall, so you have all winter to fix it.
Well, the deed is done, I hope you can get ridin' again this summer.
How long will it take to fix?

I wouldn't trust that triple tree or steering tube. I would also replace the bearing races in the head tube as well.

When I see a group of deer together I'll try and get 3 or 4, for payback.

I'm working on getting the whole works right now from someone who offered one that he has. The bearings and races are toast, I straightened the forks somewhat with a large pry bar so I could steer it into my garage, and it goes "bump, bump" in a couple of spots, indicative of crushed bearings.

After a great day of riding with my buddies today, on the way home I crashed my bike in a ditch, on a straight stretch of road.
Two things made this happen. The first was that I was tired and should have stopped to stretch and get more alert. The second thing was the fact that this is a deer infested road, and one of the critters ran out in front of me. I didn't hit it, but in the avoidance of it, my front tire ran onto the soft dirt shoulder, which pulled me down the steep grassy ditch at about 50 mph. I was riding it out, and thought I would get it stopped under control before a driveway embankment, but in the braking procedure and the soft ground, my front tire dug in and tossed me. I'm not sure if the bike flipped or not, but from the damage I think it did. My trunk is damaged, my right saddlebag is toast, the rear carrier and backrest were bent up also. My vetter fairing is ruined also, but I have another one of those, so that's not a problem. My forks are twisted, but the triple tree and the frame is fine.
I came out fine, very upset with myself for being so stupid, I've probably got bruises I'll find tommorrow, but I came out of it ok, and I was only 11 miles from home, of course.
Reminder to self: Pull over and wake yourself up when you're tired, idiot!!!

Reading through the thread, and looking at the damage in the pics, it would seen you had some energy built up when you hit that bank. The forces necessary to smash the fairing and luggage, bend the forks and trash the head bearings would have done some awful things to your body. You lucked out my friend. I'm glad.

Damn, Dan - That really sucks!!! Glad you made it out relatively unscathed, though! Did you happen to see the thread on the $450 '84 GK in the Detroit area? Maybe this was a sign that you should upgrade! I'd guess that whatever you sink into the repairs on the 850 would likely be close to (Or exceed) the investment in the GK, and anything you might need for it could possibly come from the 850.

...Something to consider.

So sorry to hear about Bambi trying to snuff you out! I've been out for a couple of long day trips and both of them had deer crossing my path. Glad to hear you fared well and it sounds like the 850 is going to possibly make a recovery too.

Here in Quebec, it's mandatory that deers cross at the sign. Thousands of tickets handed by cops each year, dumb animal just don't listen.
