Yea Ill be buying the gear before the registration. Ill just leave the bike in the garage till then.

Here is a question...does anyone wear extra armor under leathers? Is it just overkill? Something like this...

You don't need that under full leathers or good textiles... maybe a back brace.

That would be good under street clothes or riding in the dirt I would think..

Bruce, really sorry to hear about your misfortune, and extremely glad you weren't hurt worse than you were. ATGATT can sometimes be inconvenient, but since ANYBODY can take a spill, prepared is the only reasonable course. Glad your bike wasn't any worse. The old saying about two types of riders, those who've been down, and those that haven't YET, says it all. My brother took a spill about 35 years ago, a week after getting a new Shoei full-face helmet, and took a chunk out of the helmet on a curb. He'd either be dead, or we'd be watering him. Right then, I vowed NEVER to ride without a helmet, and the good folks here at the GSR have convinced me long ago that I need all the protection I can get. That sneaky gravel IS trying to get us, and when experienced, shrewd riders fall prey, we ALL should take heed. I hope you're feeling better soon, and hope to come out to NV and ride with you sometime.

The shirt armour is good under a jacket that doesn't have any built in but there are some drawbacks. I have a Knox shirt that fits kind of skin tight like the one illustrated likely would. Fine to keep you warm but no good for summer riding or in warm climates. They are meant to wear under a jacket tight to the body so they can get sweaty.

I prefer jackets with attached armour as I don't feel so constricted. I do wear it in the colder weather under the black leather as I'm wearing in my avatar pic.. That shot was taken a couple of Februarys back when temps were in the minus but we had no snow. I just had a Tshirt under the Knox and I was toasty.

I think elbow pads and a back protector would be more than ample for most situations.

When I was looking for a new riding jacket, I came across a various jackets. Some looked cooler than others, BUT I also had to keep in mind about the DOD regs for my base. So I finally picked up a Jacket from motorcycle-superstore.com that met the regs. This jacket has the spine, elbow, and shoulder pads for added protection. I love this jacket and wear it 90% of the time (5% I'll admitt I just wear a hoodie or shirt, the other 5% I wear my leather jacket). So far I've been lucky enough NOT to eat it taking a turn or anything.

On another note, the thing that makes me scratch my head is when I see kids on sport bikes and the only protection, besides a full face (if they are wearing one), is just the spine armor. Really? Ya look like a tool.
