    Cracklist Babies

    Hello guys!

I am sure everyone has gone through trials with buying bikes and parts, here is one of my stories.

Well, I have had my GS for about a year and a half now, having gotten it from a co worker friend who took pity on me as I looked for an older street bike to tinker on. Once it was in my hands for $300, I started checking the usual places for the parts it needed or even another parts bike. I no longer have access to e*ay or Cracklist during the workday, even at lunch, but that is probably for the best.

I have had decent luck dealing with e*ay and Cracklist, but I have to say any free service is rife with flakes. At least e*ay scammers have to put up some coin and modest attempt at confirmation is made and payp*l offers a bit of recourse.

The one thing Cracklist offers more than e*ay is the joy of dealing one on one with some crazy individuals. I wish I would have kept the pics and the correspondence from these ads to illustrate the stories, but I didn’t know about GSR at the time so I did not feel the need.

The first ad simply stated “Suzuki $400 obo” and was a one sentence ad with several spelling errors and a small pic of an ’82 GS1100E with no front fender or side cover (at least on this side) in front of a barn. The best part was the milk crate bungee’d to the back with the dog sitting in it, an Australian Sheppard by the looks of it.

It was about two hours away, but I thought if it runs well it is at least worth that. And I might be able to talk him down some as the ad stated he needed to get rid of it quick, like today. The ad was a day old when I saw it, but it was still up so I emailed him. Normally, I hate it when there is no phone # attached and you have to jump through hoops to get a hold of the seller, but this time I am glad I didn’t give this guy my contact info.

I ask if the bike is still for sale and if he has any better description of it, like does it run, why he is selling it, does it have papers, etc. He responds back in a rambling, page long email with no pronunciation, capitalization and atrocious spelling. I really wish I would have kept it, to try and reproduce it would be like copying the Mona Lisa, and it would pale next to the master. I will paraphrase.

Yes, he still had the bike but he was being evicted (went on to tell me the injustices of the system and how his girlfriend had left with his cash and his car) and had to do a deal NOW! The bike ran, and will run again once some of the parts had been put back on. Apparently the little photo in the ad was a “before” picture. When it did run, it was FASSSST (his word), he had pulled wheelies in ALL 4 gears (I guess he started in second) and it would do 90 in second. But it needed a little work now, he said he was a get-r-done kind of guy, like me (apparently he knew me already) and could have it running in a few hours if he had to, without any new parts. You do what you have to do, right? Never say never. He did say it didn’t look like the picture anymore, but he didn’t have a camera. He still doesn’t provide a contact number, or say whether or not he has the papers for it.

I write back thanking him for getting back to me and ask the same questions again. I also ask what is wrong with it.

He writes back another page long reply talking about brotherhood and how you make the best of what you have, right? He tells me the outer covers are shattered from being dropped but not to worry, he slathered JB weld on them and they “hardly leak a drop”. He said he no longer has the seat and the tank is damaged as well as the headlight and forks. Not to worry, it wasn’t ‘recked (his word), it was from being pulled by a tractor. He says he has papers and “if I really need them” he could try to find them. Still no number.

I write back that I am probably not interested, especially for $400 in a non running, damaged GS with no papers, which needed to be pulled by a tractor. Was it seized? I thank him for his time and tell him no thanks.

He writes back the third page of his Rain Man style replies. States the bike isn’t seized, the tractor was to pull it out of the barn.

    During the fire.

    That burned the seat.

Which is one of the reasons for the eviction.

He rambles on about the American dream and people looking out for each other, etc, etc, etc. Still no contact number.

At this point I stop reading and write back I am really not interested, too much trouble, I can’t miss work to close a deal before the next weekend, thanks again, good bye.

This time he replies in all caps about wasting his time, how California sucks and he’s going back to Ohio. Oh, and he would take $200.

    Still no contact number.

I have a second story for another time about a kid selling the GS dragbike he inherited from his uncle, while still at his uncle’s funeral. I really wanted that one.

    Cheers, Erick

I tried to sell a bike on CL once. I had 17 emails ranging from a Mexican national who didn't speak English, have a license, or any idea where he lived all the way to a teenager who wanted to trade me an ipod, a wii and a digital camera for it. I asked him if he could shoplift a 1200 CC bandit and then we would make a deal.

You meet the strangest people on CL. And remember, most get to vote just like you can.

The local ad for the 1100 I picked up stated that it was an '83 1000E, the description was maybe a sentance. So, I figured it was either a pre 80 1000 or maybe a '83 1100. So, after emailing him a few times I figured out it was at least a 4 valve 1100, year unknown. Acutally turned out to be an '82 1100EZ. And a peach at that. These bikes are soooo much more rare up here than down there. Sitting in his basement for 24 years.
          Quite a find

talked to the nicest guy selling his 750L. Was selling it for $500, total steal in good condition. No papers though, it was owned by a man who died and his parents just wanted it gone. Tried at $300 because a title costs $300 and he respectfully rejected the offer. Called him again and he did sell, was nice enough to let me know he sold it for $500 and wished me luck finding a bike.

I've been trying to sell a complete RF900 engine/transmission for about a month now on CL. For $50, just to get it out of the way. Here is a typical email exchange.

                    "Does it run?"

Well, no, the engine turns freely with compression as I said in my ad. It's not a boat anchor. It's just the engine, for $50.

"Do you have all the other stuff to make it run?"

Well, yes, I do. I have the carbs. harness, CDI unit, coils. All the basic stuff you'd need to put it in your... (insert 4 wheeler, go cart, bobber, etc...), but that's not included for $50. I really want it gone, so I'll make you a deal on that stuff though $125 for everything.

Can you meet me halfway on my 132 mile drive to pick it up?

Well, no, if I wanted to spend half a day messing with it, I'd go to the trouble to crate it up nicely and sell it on ebay for 4 times that price.

Then never hear from them again.
Variations on the above theme involving trades for old computers, etc....

I haven’t had to sell on Cracklist, yet. I have gotten some good deals off it as well, mostly appliances and tools, some parts. I don’t mess around, I establish what it is, where they are and make arrangements to close the deal. Like I said, I have had decent luck. But you have to wade through a lot of muck to find the treasures.

The other GS specific bit of fun I had with Cracklist involved an ad that stated “Suzuki dragbike, $600”. The ad showed a cell phone camera pic of a lowered 83 GS1100E with a Corbin seat, struts, flatslides and pods from what I could make out, it was facing out a clean garage door to a nice suburban street. It was a dark color and looked clean. The ad stated they wanted to sell it today, no location, and no phone number, apologized for the pic as it was taken with his Blackberry and that was how he placed the ad. No other details. It was placed at 8 in the morning and I found it and responded before 8:30. I emailed immediately telling him to consider it sold and I would meet with him immediately to pay for it, asked for contact and location info and I put in my cell number.

I get an email about 15 minutes later. Judging by the spelling and abbreviations he seemed like a teenager. He wrote back saying he was going to sell it to the first person to show up with the money, he is in a town in the north bay, but he wasn’t sure of the address as he was only in town for the funeral. He would get back to me with the address. Still, no phone number.

I email back that I am about three hours away, but would leave right now if I knew something would still be there when I arrived. I would get directions from him on the way if he would give me a number.

About an hour later I get another email. He says they are on the way to the funeral of his uncle, the former owner of the bike. Says he inherited it. States he is up from Palm Springs with his girlfriend for the day and he can’t take the bike home with him and need to sell it today. He continues to tell me how his cousins and he fired it up this morning and scared the crap out of himself tearing down the street on it. Still no number, but he says he will call me after the funeral if I give him a number. I am beginning to think he is sending this message to several people as I already included my number twice before, but I do it again stating I would be on my way already if he gave me confirmation, no questions asked.

Nothing happens for four hours, so I email him again, apologizing if he is still at the funeral but asking for an update.

He writes back about an hour later stating his cousin decided he wants it, so it isn’t for sale anymore. But he would gibe my info to him if he changes his mind.

The ad remains up for three more days.

I suspect it is most Internet sales. I belong to a car forum b/c of my TransAm. I am looking for a stock rear end that I can rebuild with the parts I have on hand. Found one posted on the forum, in "NW Indiana" and I contacted the guy. Well, he was actually 30 minutes south of Chicago in Ill. Hmm. I asked him what parts came with it, and about where he lived so I could mapquest the distance. We went back and forth for several more emails, constantly degrading. He wasn't definite on what came with it, didn't have actual possession, his buddy took it apart to use some parts from it, he was going to pick it up, etc., never even saying where he was located until the last, even though I patiently asked each time, as well as for a picture or two (which never came). I finally surrendered, as he had lowered me to his level of stupidity and then beaten me with experience.
