    Skunk is alive and well

Not a great road adventure, but a nice short maiden voyage in the cold with my "freshened up" '78 GS1000. Only a few words but a pic is worth a thousand!

It is okay to ride...the mirrors are still taller than the snowbank.
      Looks great, Lurch.

I used to think the skunk was outdated and ugly looking but when I found this neglected baby for cheap...well, I guess I couldn't resist. Now, I think they're classic looking (like my old Nortons) but without the headaches(or as many!). With the few miles I put on it the other day, it felt good and ran good, but I hope to log a 1K miles before the end of April (cold!!!) to really see if I like the ride. I have new front/rear tires ready for me to mount, when I get my current focus off my GS1100E project that I'm attempting. I'm not sure of the '83 1100G bars that I had and put on to replace the awful hi-rise bars that it had when I got it. Even though they seem close to original style from the pics I've seen of other skunks, the 6" rise is still a little high for me, even tilted back. I prefer around a 2-4" rise like on the Daytona or Superbike bars... similiar to the '82 GS1100E style bars with the 30" span. Can anyone measure they're original stock '78 bars for me?

BTW, send me a PM if anyone has the matching side covers in decent shape (for a reasonable price?), even if they're not black.

PS...side story- PO was thinking of repainting, chopping, etc...but wisely didn't hack it up. The tank and tail piece paint are really in pretty good shape after some cleaning on my part!

Hey Lurch, The bars that were on mine are 31 inches apart with about a 6.5 inch rise. This is assuming they're factory but I've not seen a part on it yet thats not.

I have a right side cover. Nice shape, but it's school bus yellow, like my bike used to be. Could even be an original Skunk cover, as my bike was actually a Skunk. Lemme know if you're interested.

That's a great pic. I suggest you submit it for BOTM.
