    Beer run with a bonus!

So last night I grilled up some dinner and had 1 guinness left for the grilling, really cant grill without beer. Anyways after dinner I decided I should get a few beers before my buddies came over, so being such nice weather I took the GS. I can fit 2 6 packs in the bag so figured that should be fine.

Well I got to my local packie and the parking lot is full, its in a strip mall with a grocery store to the side and figure its overflow from that. Well I find a parking spot and head in to see it was the beer store, place was mobbed and tables set up all over. The entrance is the wine section and I soon realize they are having a wine tasting, well figure thats kindof cool but where is my beer? So I go to the back and start looking through the coolers and see they got harpoon on sale so I decide on that. I then notice some people with beer glasses and my interest was peaked.

I left my initial selection and find my way to the counter to ask what all this is about, seems they are having a wine AND beer tasting, and its all free. The beer vendors where tucked in the corner near the bottle returns. I make my way back to the start of the store and get my little brochure, sampled 15 or so little 2 oz cups and tried some really nice micro brews I would not have considered buying just to see if I liked it. They had a really cool system too where the brochure listed the prices and a discount price for the event. Ones I wanted I gave them my number and they tagged the beer and had it ready for me up front to check out.

The only problem was I could only fit so much beer on the bike, so I had to be picky. Some of my favorites I "sampled" just cause it was free but again tried some really nice stuff. I settled on a growler of "dirty penny" from a micro brewer in conneticut and a growler of IPA from a micro brew here in Massachusetts. I also got a 6 pack of gannsett cause the cute girls offered me a free glass, to bad it didnt come with a number...

Oh and there was a free food table but since this wasnt planned I made my way to the last beer table when they annouced it was 8 and the event was done.

I packed the growlers in the bag on my sissy bar and strapped the 6 pack on the seat using my bungee cord tool bag to hold it in place. Its only a 5 minute ride home but I was sure to keep my sampling down to what added up to about 2 regular beers. Thats always been my limit. I texted my buddies about the event but was to late for them to make it, they half expected me to message them saying I need a ride cause I sampled to much and bought to much to fit on the bike. lol

Oh and even though I didnt get it the Harpoon Imperial IPA was delicious, 10% alchohol makes up for the $8 tag on a 4 pack. Kind of like and 8 pack of 5% beer with less bathroom breaks.

Got to love little surprises like that.

I'm no teatottaller and enjoy my beer too but I just can't see drinking and riding. Even little samplers that add up to no more than 2 bottles. In the span of 15 minutes or so ( I assume)that will give sufficient buzz to put you off your game even if you don't acknowledge it. I think you were taking a needless chance especially since a majority of accidents ( statistically) seem to happen toward the end of a ride and close to home.

Two weekends back, on my ride, I stopped for lunch at a little open air bar and grill. There was a riding couple already there and they had polished off a pitcher between them then order two more pints each which they downed within the next half hour. I didn't see any food consumed and they rode off immediately after finishing their beers. I hoped they made it home safely.

With summer almost here it seems a pleasant way to break up a great ride, stopping and having a brew or two on a sunny patio but to me its courting disaster. I'm glad you made it home ok but next time please save the drinking until you're home cleaning and polishing the ride.

    Cheers,
    spyug

this is kind off topic but if you must put your beer in the trunk of the car where are you legally suppose to have it on the bike. lol micro breweries usually make great beer but only until they start to mass produce.

Yea, I hear you on the sample thing but I set my limit LOW for a reason. Two beers on my 220lb frame is nothing, I am probably legal at a more that that and did not take the short ride into account for justifying more.

If I did have more I had options and would have parked the bike and got a ride.

In fact the reason I hit the packie is to get some beer to enjoy at home

Well ok, point wasnt omg i got a ton of free beer! it was I got to sample a lot of beers I would not have wanted to buy a six pack of to taste. I have gone to beer tastings before and planned accordingly and had the ride set up.

If I wasnt fit to ride home I wouldnt have, I see how on the forums its easy to assume but I do know myself pretty well and am extremely conservative on whats ok to drive with. Like I said typically its 1 beer but 2 is my max. If I felt at all like wow that hit me to hard I would have called for my ride.

Oh and here its not just a ticket, its at least the night in jail, loss of license and big fines. Not that the legal side should be the only factor but it is part of the equation. For example I could legally be under the limit with 4 beers in an hour but I would never drive on that.

                    OK, back to your thread.....

Which beer did you enjoy most. Dark, Wheat, Room temp or cold ? How was the Gannsett ? That Harpoon sounds like it would knock yer socks ! When is the next tasting ? Maybe spend some "quality" time there. Just leave the bike at home....

                      Well on to the subject

I enjoy a lot of beer depending on the weather and my mood. They had a lot of light summer ales out but I skipped most of them and went to the IPA's and darker beers. I like to taste my beer and the wheat ales dont usually cut it, but at times it does hit the spot.

I dont have the labels here to plug the right companies, but the brewer from CT had some nice sellections and the one I got was as he put it a black and tan in a bottle. Its a mix of their chocolate stout and pale ale, the chocolate taste never really showed (good in my opinion) but had a hint of the roasted hops. I once had a German beer that dries the hops in a smoke house, that was some good stuff.

Anyways, of all the IPA's I tried I went with one from a local micro brew. Opa Opa I believe is the name... had some stuff from them before and they definately did good on the IPA.

Now the Narraganesset is not a um... "quality" micro brew per say, its more my cheap beer of choice that drinking it for free at a buddies house that lived down the road from me (walking distance folks) got me hooked on. I would rate it a bit above PBR lol but again I aquired the taste for it as my buddy always had it stocked up.

I also enjoyed some nice selctions from various mid sized breweries like Long Trail, Gritty's, Whachusetts, and a few others. Oh and the bigger "micro" breweries where in house with Sam Adams and Harpoon, both have some great stuff... maybe harpoon is more on the small scale but I always love the beer they make.

Man, why can't I ever accidentally show up at a beer tasting?

....that reminds me, I have a pale ale in the fermenter in the basement waiting to be bottled........

If you haven't already, you should give Stone's BC a try. Their "Arrogant Bastard" and "Double Bastard" ales are particularly good but my fav of theirs is their "Russian Imperial Stout". They are out of San Fran so I dunno if you can find them easily on the east coast. Founders BC is also good. Their "Breakfast Stout" and "Imperial Porter" are quie tasty. They're out of MI so Maybe easier to find. But my favorite dark by far would be a toss up between Bells "Expedition" Stout (very chocolate malt, very sweet almost a desert beer) or Dragons Milk stout. Keep in mind ALL of these have a very high ABV content ( the lowest being the Arrogant Bastard at around 7% I think) and because of the construction of the beer you will actually absorb more ofthat alcohol than you would drinking pee water beers. A fact that some people do not seem to understand. Budweiser actually has a higher ABV than Guinness but drink a couple of each and you will see the Guinness has a greater effect on you impairment just keep that in mind while sampling if you're riding

I often wondered about that, cause Guinness is actually pretty low but you feel a few of them pretty quick.

Another fun fact is Guinness has less calories than Bud, if measuring the same size glass. When I do get it on tap I love the fact an english pint is 20oz, hate when I order a pint of Guinness and they come back with a 16oz glass...

Aside from a few imports like that I do try to buy local so even though thats likely a great micro brew I will probably wait till Im out that way to try it. Once while visiting Oregon I picked up some Sam Adams only to find out it was on the shelf way to long and skunked... its much nicer to get a local beer a day or so after they finish the brew.

Yet another reason not to drink Crapweiser.

A huge pet peeve of mine is when I order a Sam Adams (or other brand of beer that has multiple styles) at a bar/restaurant, and the server brings me whatever the seasonal Sammy (or whatever brand I ordered) they happen to have on tap. There is a big difference between a Sammy lager (which is what I wanted) and a Sammy Winter Brew, Summer Ale (etc). I'm not saying they are bad beers, but they are indeed completely different beers. It's the same as giving a someone a Chardonnay of some brand of wine, when they ordered a Merlot.

OK, I'm now getting off my soap box now and returning the thread to its rightful owner.
